St. Jerome and the Lion

Inspired by the painting of the same name by Jean-Léon Gérôme.

[Verse 1]

The powerful, majestic lion

Crowned king of the jungle,

Even the mightiest will fall

Reduced down by a single thorn

[Verse 2]

Our demons, can possess us.

Weakens us, when out of control.

Even the mightiest, are not immune.

Diminished by, a single thorn.

[Chorus]

St. Jerome and the lion, a parable

Of overcoming, fear and adversity

When the mighty, becomes weak

And the weak, becomes strong

[Verse 3]

A saint, a recluse, by design

Invisible, in his cave, lost in study

Sounds, of anguish, from outside

Breaks concentration, losing his focus

[Verse 4]

We often, hide behind, our demons

Disappearing, behind a, thin mask

Allowing, us to give, the illusion

Of something, we are not

[Chorus]

St. Jerome and the lion, a parable

Of overcoming, fear and adversity

When the mighty, become weak

And the weak, become strong

[Verse 5]

The bright sun, reduces his vision

As the saint, emerges from the dark

Face to face, with a mighty beast

Steadfast, he stands, tall and strong

[Verse 6]

We are all, blinded by our own fears,

And insecurities, lost in the light.

Like St. Jerome, we can overcome,

Our own fears, and adversities.

[Chorus]

St. Jerome and the lion, a parable

Of overcoming, fear and adversity

When the mighty, become weak

And the weak, become strong

[Verse 7]

Without fear and with compassion

St. Jerome removes the thorn

From the paw of the giant beast

Who in return, shows mercy

[Outro]

It takes great courage to stand,

Up and face our demons head on.

To not bow to pressure, persevere,

We become empowered, strong.

  • Freaking LOVE this, Bill!!! I feel educated just by your lyric! Took me right there! Now, for a listen! Intense as expected! And I grabbed myself a copy of St. Jerome and the Lion.

Thanks so much for your incredible ability to make songs of paintings; really cool!

    A fan,

    Renee

  • Thanks for the kind words. That painting actually reminds me of apollo, the german shephard that used to come down all of the time.. sometimes, in the summer we would lay like that... I actually cropped that painting and did a copy

  • When I first read the lyrics, I thought this will be difficult to set to music. Again, you caught me out and taught me not to prejudge. Suno really did a good job with this, I enjoyed it very much. Well done.

  • thanks @sidshovel it starts off a bit slow, but then picks up..
