Lifes experiences capture us, in another comment to you, I mentioned Cohen, there's another example of an artist who comes across as reflective and dark, Waits certainly has his moments, but can you turn away from them, no they capture us and we relate.

The AI hasn't put much emphasis on 'just a shadow of myself". You could try adding another line on the chorus "Yeah a shadow of myself" or something like that, see how it sounds.
Like the style you chose for it.

During and after verse 5 the power curve builds progressively on each "shadow of myself" introducing more instrumentation including the sax, it works for me. Not discounting what your saying on emphasis, I agree, but I don't think that emphasis would work with the vocals, it would sound off. More sax maybe, but easy to go overboard and blow the flow!
I could never understand those expressions:
I couldn't believe myself
I kept tellin' myself. etc
So I gave "myself" a persona.
