The final song in the hurtin' trilogy, the pain brought on by guilt

[verse 1]

The soldier stood guard, outside the palace gates,

Tourists taking selfies, stand attention by his side.

His eyes focused on a spot far into the distance.

Twenty years, serving his country with pride.

[verse 2]

The bearskin on his head, weighed heavily today.

Recallin' the bad times, in an Afghan hell-hole.

Ten years ago, he boarded the plane for home.

Brought his body back, but left behind his soul.

[chorus]

Don't thank him, for his service,

it was all, for country an' his kin.

Everythin' he did, he had to do,

it came down, to them or him.

[verse 3]

The I.E.D. took the lives, of four of his friends.

Boys protectin' the people from Taliban rule.

They played football with the children,

escorted young girls, on their way to school.

[chorus]

Don't thank him, for his service,

it was all, for country an' his kin.

Everythin' he did, he had to do,

it came down, to them or him.

[verse 4]

The patrol came under fire, from a farmhouse.

Rockets left just rubble, there was moanin' inside.

Taliban fighters, little more than kids, lay there,

cowered in a corner, nowhere else to hide.

[chorus]

Don't thank him, for his service,

it was all, for country an' his kin.

Everythin' he did, he had to do,

it came down, to them or him.

[verse 5]

Visions of his comrades, what was left of them,

flashed across his eyes, everythin' turned red.

He pulled the pin, tossed it in, shut the door.

moanin' stopped, the pain began in his head.

[chorus]

Don't thank him, for his service,

it was all, for country an' his kin.

Everythin' he did, he had to do,

it came down, to them or him.

[bridge]

They pinned a medal on his chest,

the inquiry, overlooked the rest.

A hero returned, back from the war,

they didn't see, what he had saw.

[final chorus]

Don't thank him, for his service,

it was all, for country an' his kin.

Everythin' he did, he had to do,

it came down, to them or him.

[outro]

He stared at that spot, in the distance,

Helmand, a place known to very few.

The tourist at his side, took a selfie,

but would he take another, if he knew.

  • @sidshovel - the same sentiment for those who served in vietnam.. I served with a few.. I like the lyrics, they tell a story.

Thanks Bill, I knew some too, it was a common story nobody wanted to tell or hear.

  • Some scars can't be seen, they can only be felt.

  • I like the message, but I found the lyric a bit wordy. I think you need to distil it down to some pithy phrases to make it really hit hard as a song.

    @Barry

    @RainyDayMan

    Thanks guys, appreciate your comments.

Many of these soldiers carry a lot of baggage inside when they come back.

Not sure that "pithy" suits the context, bit like sending a telegram of condolences.

Functional, but not the done thing.
