Shade of the Paris blues (new song)
Hi all,
I just went to Paris to study the life of Edith Piaf and coming back with a bit of a downer because I had so much fun and it’s so beautiful over there. This song is all about the whole story and it’s a bit of a departure for me because I have different segments reflecting different aspects of the trip. I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics:
She’s got a shade of the Paris blues.
A deep dark shade of the Paris blues.
What is she going to do now?
What is she going to do?
She’s got a shade of the Paris blues.
Make no mistake. She needs her cake.
Deep dark Paris blues.
She planned for months, this Piaf tour.
A list of places made it so much more.
More than she’d ever done before, more than she’s ever done.
Walking Through the entrancing city
Paris Parigi her soul was dizzy.
Monuments spilled joy and victory.
Feeling the ages of turmoil and history
A myriad of light softened edges
Her eyes tickled by Winsome pledges.
Oh has she gone to heaven?
She found her place her brethren
Even with rain it felt like ease
With every wander, it was more please.
S’il vous plaît, s’il vous plaît, she’s on her knees
S’il vous plaît, s’il vous plaît she wants more please
Enraptured was the word.
Piaf a grand dame of the chanson
Legend in France that died too soon.
A voice that hit through the heart.
About love that would never part.
Her spots are sprinkled around the city
In bars, museums apartments plenty
Each gave insights to her destiny.
She was there to see at all, from her birth to her fall.
Armed with a grand brioche in hand.
From Du Pain et des Idées, a brand
she fit right in, she found her kin.
And she was on the road of inspiring.
infused with an elixir she hadn’t tasted.
Celestial delights were not wasted.
She found a new home in Paris Parigi
How grand was her home?
The clock struck it was time to go
like a soldier on furlough
Vowing to be back again vowing to be back again.
And the flight was a tearful proposition
writing a poem of appreciation
Wrenched from the arms for soulmate city
she look like a wreck of sorrow and pity
boo-hoo boo
As soon as she stepped off the plane, it was back to the world insane
pollsters were ringing on her on the phone, this is reality don’t you know?

I've heard your music before. It's quiet inventive. This song is good. I bet you could do a great children's album!
The only other thing I will add is: What's the big deal with Paris? I don't get it. Just a large city with mostly unremarkable buildings (not everything of course!). I'm not saying people shouldn't go; I'm saying why do they? Have I missed something?

An eclectic mix of styles and sounds which, to my ear didn't work that well.
I'm not a blues fan which may have influenced my view, so I'll be interested to hear the opinions of those who are, such as RDM.
Many thanks for posting.

Primitive and pure...just you and a guitar...I love the sound of finger tips sliding on strings...very interesting beautiful voice, tune and story. Might want to shorten it up a bit. Let's hear more.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I appreciate your listening and commenting. Let me say that I see songwriting as a way to 1. have fun 2. tell the truth and make it rhyme (Lennon's take on it) and 3. to be experimental. I appreciate how the Beatles didn't like to repeat themselves and pushed the envelope. This is the longest song I've ever written or recorded and I consider it a first draft. Let's see what becomes of it.
Paris is a place for those who love aesthetics, good food, art, architecture and a magical sort of ambiance. Maybe it's not for everyone, but it is for me. I keep thinking about it since it was a natural fit.
I'm not really that into the blues as a genre, but since I was feeling blue, I felt it was a good style for this song. I have to say that the process was kind of whimsical and organic.
"Primitive and pure," "children's album," "eclectic," "inventive." Thank you! I resonate with these words as I do have a childlike quality and have been told that others could see me in some sort of beatnik bohemian cafe giving an expressive and raw performance.
This song comes at a time when the political situation in the U.S. has made me feel blue. So it's like a double whammy.

I always enjoy your songs Paulina! I like the simplicity of just you and the guitar and the purity of your voice.
This one feels like a Grand Tour, musically - so much variety!
It starts off with the blues, then getting to Paris changes her mood, and the song lifts accordingly. I've got a soft spot for Paris, so I can agree with that!
Then another change up to the percussive sound for the Edith Piaf verse. I wondered there whether you might try to imitate her sound more instead, though that might be a tall order!
Another change up at 'The clock struck it was time to go', faster and more rhythmic which fits the lyric nicely.
Then back to a minor melancholic tone as she has to go home. And the repeat of v1 to finish works well.
It's a whole story full of shade and tone.

This is gonna be a crazy mix of artists, but this brings to mind Iris Dement, Joan Baez, Laurie Anderson...and others. Very fun and interesting all the way through!
That ending is a heartbreaker 😥

I can hear this being done at poetry night in SoHo. :). Nice recording with an expressive, fun vocal and good guitar playing. I especially like the chord progression in the outro, which appears elsewhere also. It’s a little long, in the opinion of some random internet guy (me!). 😊0

@RainyDayMan -Thank you so much for your thoughts! I feel like this whole fall season has been a rollercoaster for me and all of the U.S, which led to this smorgasbord effect. This Piaf trip was like 5-course meal with its ups and downs. I hope to ground myself soon!
@mattyoung - I appreciate your kind words. I love to include fun into my songs and for you to even mention those artists just thrills me.
@TomC - Thank you so much! Expressive poet musician? I'll take it from anyone, random internet guy or not. :)

Another charming song from you Paulina. Very interesting lyrics which tell the story of Edith Piaf and delivered in your trademark style.
I enjoyed listening.😀

@ChrisPrice Thank you, Chris. Maybe we were there at the same time! We definitely walked away with different takes. I stayed in the 10th near the Place de la Republique. Anyway, a beautiful and incredible city full of inspiration to write many songs.
