This is the second in a showcase of five of my songs showing the diversity of the CW genre and its ability to absorb different styles. This, I believe, is an example of the storytelling style exemplified by such classics as "the gambler" and "coward of the county". Comments welcome on any aspect of CW.
[verse 1]
Darkwood Green was a nice place to live,
kids played in the park till the skies went dark.
Fun and laughter filled the sleepy town,
porch lights came on, when the sun went down.
[verse 2]
The day began just like, those that went before,
neighbours called out, through unlocked doors.
The rumour mill kicked in, went into overdrive,
a girl's body's been found, and she wasn't alive.
[refrain]
And the sun went down, on the death of a town.
[instrumental, 8 bars]
[verse 3 ]
Police siren's wail, sent shivers through the spine,
roads blocked, streets taped off, not a good sign.
Townsfolk in slippers, wore a mask of disbelief,
hugged each other tightly, shared a common grief.
[verse 4]
The Sheriff called a meeting, in the local church,
most came, some were helping with the search.
A drifter had been caught hiding behind a barn,
blood was on his hands, he showed no sign of harm.
[refrain]
And the sun went down on the death of a town.
[verse 5]
Darkness brought a silence, never heard before,
people fitted screens and heavy locks for doors.
Innocence was carried away, another victim of the crime,
The town would never be the same, for a long, long time.
[outro]
And the sun went down on the death of a town.

Yep, that's a great story telling song.
I like how the rhyming scheme changes in lines 1 & 2 between verses 1 & 2. I'm not pointing that out to criticize, but as a lesson to others. Sometimes a little flexibility is a good thing to get a more natural feel, and listening or reading, it just flows without any bumps at all.
As a suggestion, when I got to the refrain my head went:
And the sun went down, yeah the sun went down, on the death of a town.
I think the mood of the lyric is a little darker than what the AI music generated here.
Great story!

Sid, are you ok if I have a go at a different version of this?

I'd be honoured, go for it and thank you

And the sun went down, yeah the sun went down, on the death of a town.
The refrain is a lament on the loss, the "yeah" may distract, better "Oh"?

I find it strange that the storytelling style seems to fit more naturally into the CW genre than it does say, the traditional or folk ones. For some reason, I think Folksy styles constrain the way the stories are told, not sure why, but may account for the strong similarities in the songs.

I'll let you hear it first and we can decide then.
