Song: "Crazy A**hole"

I've been away from here for well over a year, I suspect. Dark family business changed the flow of my life. Now I'm "back in the ring to take another swing."

This song is my first ever collaboration. I met my friend Frank Pratte on a guitar forum years ago and we've long kicked around the idea of long-distance collaboration (-he lives in San Diego while I live in South Florida) but never got anything across the finish line until this.

Crazy Asshole by The Crazy Assholes (Frank Pratte & Mark Rhodes) - YouTube

Lyrics in the description box. I play the guitar and sing. Frank does everything else.

  • I'd like to hear this played in a live band. It would be a great bar room rocker. It's a bit of good time rock n roll so that's right up my street. I'm not sure that I'd use A@@hole in the title but, then again, as a pub rocker I don't suppose it matters. I enjoyed this. Encore!!😀

  • Hi Mark! Nice to see you back.

Good fun collaboration between you and Frank.

Nothing heavy here, just light and fun with some strong guitar licks. What's not to like?

  • Great atmosphere, true style and very entertaining!!!

  • Well most crazy assholes live in the states , we have a track record

    Sounds good man

    Thanks for all the comments!

Thought I'd share a comment I got at SongTown from a pro songwriter. (I have no affiliation with SongTown; I joined for a while a year or so ago, then canceled the subscription, and recently signed back up. This was the first thing I submitted for Pro Feedback, meaning, the person giving the feedback is a professional songwriter who has at least one hit song to his or her credit.)

Here is what I heard about this song:

    >>>>Haha – this one made me smile – thank you for that. :). This one could really work in a comedy genre, but I think you’d have to make a few tweaks for the commercial market. I’m not sure starting with the kid and calling a kid a crazy ******* will work in today’s world – comedy or not. I’d keep it all about things he’s done as an adult. The other thing I’d do would be take out the cheating at the end. No one likes a cheater. You can still keep this guy likable and funny without having to completely make him an ass. Who would you pitch this to? This is always something to keep in mind when writing for the commercial market. Not sure if radio would play a**hole on repeat but again – it’s all about having fun – this one would be a fun live song. Some songs I have written only for live performances and this one would work. My main suggestion is just to make sure each picture and moment of this guy is really funny and he gets exactly what he deserves. Keep him likable so the audience still laughs and agrees that he deserves that but doesn’t hate him. Good luck with this one!<<<<<

  • If you are looking to make the song commercial, then that's probably good advice. If you just want to play it for friends, or at a local venue I think it will hold up fine as is.

I found the comments interesting. I don't intend to change the song but reflecting on what the pro said, I realized I come from a singer-songwriter perspective: that is, I don't write songs that I intend for other people to sing. (It's fine with me if they do, but I'm not writing a song with singer X in mind in hopes he'll put it on his next CD. (Some people do that and are very good at it.)

I don't care for performing. (I prefer not to leave the house at all, for that matter.) But I do love to write songs. And play guitar. My days revolve around that.

Those are legit concerns for people who want to make money writing songs. Hell, Dylan loves to make money! I was reading a Wall Street Journal interview with Mick Jagger about he's kept the Stones going all these years. Very commercial, very into making a lot of money, but you know, I still love the Stones and always will. Johnny Cash wanted to make money.

I'm interested in writing what I want to write but I also don't mind a nod of approval coming from peers. That's always nice.
