What An Ass

What An Ass

Thirty-eight years, same front porch swing

Same cracked driveway, same wedding ring

Coffee in the morning, news on low

She still knows things I don't know

I leave my boots right there by the door

She's told me 'bout a thousand times or more

I just grin and shrug it off

She just shakes her head and scoffs

We ain't what we were back then

But I'd do it all over again

Married for thirty-eight years

Yeah, I've still got it---or so it appears

Every time I pass by my wife

I hear her mumble under her breath

"Look at him... still acting like that..."

Then she smiles and says, "What an ass"

We've had our storms, slammed a few doors

Made up slow on hardwood floors

Raised some kids, watched them leave

Now it's just her and me

She rolls her eyes when I joke too much

Still reaches out when we touch

Love ain't perfect, love ain't fast

But somehow, yeah, it lasts

Lines on our faces now

Still laugh the same somehow

Married for thirty-eight years

Yeah, I've still got it---or so it appears

Every time I pass by my wife

I hear her mumble under her breath

"Lord, he don't ever change, does he?"

Then she smirks and says, "What an ass"

If that's the worst thing she can say

After all these years, I'm okay

'Cause she's still here, right by my side

Still my girl still my ride

Married for thirty-eight years

Through all the laughter and the tears

Every time I pass by my wife

She pretends I'm the bane of her life

But she grabs my hand when I walk past

And whispers low... "My kind of ass"

  • That's a really sweet lyric! A down to earth, homely, natural kind of relationship song.

I read the lyric first, and I have to say the music surprised me. I think I was expecting a slower country swing waltz or something more like that. But there's obviously lots of different treatments you could give it.

In v1 those first two lines are really tight. Set up the whole context right there. Great work.

"She still knows things I don't know" felt a little odd to me. You're going for loving and respectful and that's definitely the right direction. Maybe there's a "same smile" type line there that would fit? Could be a bit generic I suppose.

Like how you're giving us the dynamics of the relationship in v2. Comfortable as an old pair of jeans.

The "what an ass" line is both cheeky and endearing. I think it works a treat. And the final "My kind of ass" feels very loving.

    I think you're on a winner here :)

  • Nobody is married in Nashville in songs , its GF or BF

But since its your life why not

They call you alot of things , ass is rather mild

Don't think I'm headed to Nashville with this.

Your right my wife has called me worse than an ass once or maybe twice.

    Thanks Owen.

I have to confess this wasn't my idea, my wife's sister prints up t-shirts and sells them at flea markets, on line, and so forth. I've got some good t-shirts she has done, my wife showed me one I figure I'll get for my birthday, it had a dog wagging his tail and the top line said, Look's like I still got it, then the bottom line said, She's always saying, What an Ass. So that gave me something to go on.

There are many ideas floating out there. You have to see them, then act on it. I think you can claim this as yours!
