You could shorten tarpaulin to just tarp and keep the cadence without losing the meaning.
Isn't the picture of Brighton beach better than on? at first glance, to me, it read that the picture is on the beach.

If I understand the lyric, you're on an army exercise in Greenland or Canada and don't see the point of it. I sense, this must come from personal experience? I was thrown by the reference to a sniper but figured out that this was an imaginary sniper or a fellow soldier playing one in the exercise. I could be totally wrong about this, of course.
Most songs like this would have the singer actually in danger. Nice twist to make it danger of cold and boredom! Come to think of it, of course, it would be quite possible to be cold and bored on the beach at Brighton!

I like the contrast between Brighton beach, which is presumably sunny and warm and lovely, and lying dripping in a muddy hole.
It's a good story, and came out well in the AI music.
