AI Experiment

It's worth considering, we do have a Covers section.
On the other hand, I'm collabing now with Sid on Bottle of Vintage Wine because I heard the AI version and thought "that's not how I would do it", and that could happen less if the AI music generated ones are separated out. I have a feeling they might receive less attention that way.
I think I'll leave it as is for the moment. I don't have firm enough opinions on AI to set policy yet. But still open to suggestions.

I do think it is worth considering, but I totally understand why you'd want to see how things play out. These are unchartered territories and I'm not sure that anyone knows where this will take us.
Looking forward to hearing your collab with Sid.😀

I'm not sure there is a need for a separate category providing that postings state before the link that the song was created using Ai music and/or vocals. I personally only post a link after clearly stating there is an Ai component. The link is provided as a voluntary extra should the reader wish to hear what the lyrics sound like. Salt and Pepper, if you wish, your choice.
As to the future and potential duplicity, that already exists. How does anyone know whether the lyrics or songs being posted here are genuine. We trust in ours and others honesty and integrity, and that's the way it should be.
I really get Chris's and the other pro musicians concerns, I really do. In the bigger context, they do have cause for concern,
and I am with them on that. In our little pond here, I think we can be a little bit more flexible and cooperative between each other in the knowledge that we all seek the same goals.
Since the only lyrics posted on the forum using Ai are mine. As a gesture to help move the focus off Ai and back to lyrics, I'll refrain from posting links for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

No idea Chris , AI will get better I imagine

@sidshovel I don't mean to dissuade anyone from posting AI songs. There's no need to hold back imo. These things will unfold the way they're meant to. It's bound to cause some unease because it's potentially so powerful, but it's here so people like me must learn to accept it. Keep em comin' I say!😀

Hi Chris,
My comment was not directed towards anyone in particular Chris, I have a great deal of empathy towards anyone who feels under pressure from the Ai music generators. I just feel since I'm the only one posting Ai content links on the forum, I should take the lead in at least lowering the temperature and letting people breathe non-Ai air for a while. I have tried a number of songwriting forums and without a doubt this is by far the best. The thing that makes it the best is the people on this forum. Always ready to help, guide and mentor, giving significant amounts of their time to help others. If Ai raises the temperature in the group unnecessarily, then whilst none of us are likely to stop it, as individuals, and out of respect for our colleagues, we should not promote it. That I would readily subscribe to and will.

Hi Sid,
I'm really glad you feel the way you do about this forum Sid because I feel exactly the same way. I found this forum five years ago after a period of illness and I've loved my time here. I think it's the best forum too. What Owen has here is really special. Right now, there's some great people contributing, yourself included. Long may that prevail.
The AI thing has come as a bit of a shock to some musos like me, but I've learned through the discussions here that I need to accept it and maybe embrace it. It's progress and we have to accept change.

I caught a 12 lb catfish yesterday using AI

Chris, I just heard you banging out a classic R & R piece, Elvis pouring his heart out with "Don't blame me" and trust me on this one, Owen going down and dirty, (his words), on the collab we're doing. You guys are just the best, Ai doesn't even come close.
Relax and just keep rollin' them out.
Sid

Ah, but was it a real catfish or an AI robot fish?🤣

Here's a preview of a different AI music generator from ElevenLabs (not released yet)

Things are moving fast!

Just my opinion of course, but I'm just glad that I grew up when I did, that I learned to play when I did, that I wrote and recorded some real songs when I did, that I played a lot of real gigs in front of real people. AI isn't going to change anything I do..apart from maybe using some AI production tools as and when when it suits me.
I'm not in denial..AI generated music is here and it's going to be a massive game changer. But I'm a real musician and I'm proud of it.
I think the tide will eventually turn, but I'm not losing any sleep over it.😀

I guess its like Band in a box , I don't see the big deal on just learning guitar instead of getting Walmart fat and lazy waddling down isles of AI toys where $9.99 gets you every time .

I've been watching some Youtube reviews of the latest incarnation of Logic Pro. Seems that Apple are going into AI in a big way with this. To be expected I guess. It features what they call session players which are AI driven. Not for me but it's very clever stuff.

I use Cubase and I wouldn't mind betting that Steinberg are working on something similar. That's probably when I'll jump ship and stop upgrading!

I like the idea of AI session players more than a single AI overall song generator. I think that should provide more control to the songwriter in terms of what instrumentation they want, and the types of sound they want for different instruments, whilst covering the gaps for people who can't play particular instruments. I can imagine myself wanting to add AI bass and keys to a song where I do guitar and vocals for example. The current Suno/Udio style implementations are very hit and miss, and don't allow you to guide the generation other than in very broad brushstrokes via text prompting. The session player concept seems like a more advanced version of Band In a Box, and I can certainly imagine it being useful for many people.

Yes, I broadly agree with what you're saying Owen. I'm old school so I like to keep everything in house so to speak, but I can see how this concept could work as you suggest. The Suno/Udio approach just doesn't do it for me. Indeed, it's very hit and miss and I think that it has the potential to kill off the real art of songwriting. Some of the examples I've heard are really very good, but I just find it all rather sad. Session players? Yeah, that is a bit different. I won't be using them but I don't feel quite as uneasy about it.

Chris,
Do you know why people pay a load of money for vinyl recordings. Because there's just nothing like it!
Sid

Strangely enough I haven't owned a vinyl player in many moons!! But I certainly get the comparison. Trouble is, can we really tell the difference?!

Chris,
I have made my position on Ai very clear on this forum. I like it solely as a tool for me to hear my lyrics.
Having said that, I am pragmatic and honest when it comes to evaluation of Ai.
I started a thread in G D titled Problems with Suno. In short, my own opinion is that after regular use, and after the hype has worn off, you are left with a very mediocre tool. Bit like that kitchen drawer that has all those rusting neat gadgets you thought were indispensable when you bought them. Professional engineers and musicians may dabble but they will not abdicate, the difference is too great and I do not see it closing in our lifetime. Long live the Air Fryer!
Sid

Air Fryer? Is that a virtual instrument?
Seriously, I think we're all roughly on the same page. I honestly don't blame anyone for giving Ai a try, and I can see why it's a useful tool for lyricists. Bit of a shock to the system though!! I've had time to calm down now and I think your last post sums it all up rather well.
I haven't got an air fryer either!😂
This is interesting: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/sony-music-warns-ai-companies-against-unauthorized-use-of-its-content/ar-BB1mzJRM
Things are heating up. I think you predicted this Sid. Not sure how they could prove 'unauthorized use', but they can afford the right legal teams.

Bark Air, the “100% totally real airline for dogs,” had its first flight yesterday from New York to Los Angeles — and it was sold out, according to the pet company’s booking website. Although domestic tickets cost around $6,000 (for both Fido and Fido’s human), it appears you can’t put a price tag on a happy dog, as many of the upcoming flights are listed as sold out as well.
In truth, Bark Air isn’t an actual airline, but rather a charter operator. The flights are real, though, and they’re pawsitively luxurious for pups. Unlike traditional plane journeys, where non-service dogs are generally required to stay in a crate or put in aircraft cargo holds, Bark Air has space for them to “spread out comfortably,” doggie champagne (aka chicken broth), calming treats, lavender-scented towels, toys, and more.
“What we say is first class for the dog, business class for the human,” Matt Meeker, co-founder and CEO of Bark, told Robb Report. “What we’ve seen is if our primary focus is making the dog happy, then the human will be very happy.”
Currently, the airline has two routes, between New York and LA and New York and London, but more are on the horizon. “The initial launch of Bark Air is only the beginning,” the company said. Watch a video showing the in-flight experience.
