little things lyrics
The answer is your both right!
Acoustic: slow, melodic
Vocal: sad, melancholy
verse 1
Traces everywhere, your smell, your hair
Your voice in my ear, I remember what we said
You left me months ago, I just can't forget you
All the little things, like the way you made the bed
verse 2
A pair of tights in my sock drawer, your toothbrush in the glass
Everywhere I look, you're there, can't get you out of my mind
An envelope on the doormat, your name is on the front
Little things, muesli in the morning, we liked the same kind
chorus
little things are everything
when that's all that's left of you
Solo: Harmonica
verse 3
Little things will become big things, if I leave them where they are
If I throw them in the trash, then I accept you've gone for good
I like having the little things around, it is if you're here with me
Giving them back and seeing you, I don't know if I could
chorus
little things are everything
when that's all that's left of you
verse 4
I'm going to put them in a box and hide them all away
Keep them locked up in the dark, so only I can view
Take them out when I want to, play with them myself
Now I come to think of it, that's how I treated you.
chorus
little things are everything
when that's all that's left of you
outro
little things are everything
when that's all that's left of you
when that's all that's left of you
when that's all that's left of you
Harmonica (To fade)

These lyrics are sublime and definitely relate a sense of melancholy, Sid. I can imagine this with the harmonica as you suggested in the lyrics. I think the best lines were in verse 3. Good stuff!

Nice work! Thanks for sharing! 😀
Who was/is the greatest influence on your songwriting?

Good question Joseph!
The early years: Dylan, Cohen Neil Young Beatles
Mid: Simon & Garfunkle, Kristofferson, Cat Stevens, Springsteen (mellowing)
Latter: Tom Waits, Jimmy Lafave, Eric Andersen, Prine, Lucinda Williams, van Zandt, Steve Earle (maturing)
If I was to pick one for all round quality of words, it would be close between Andersen and Lafave
Thanks for the question Joseph, thought prevoking
P.S. for anyone else reading this, strongly recommend listening to those in the mature category
I can put together a top twenty combining all of them if anyone is interested message me.

Interesting choices, Sid. Among those, I'd say "The Fool on the Hill" from the Beatles and "Scarborough Fair" from Simon and Garfunkel resonate well with me.
Thanks for sharing! 😀

Ouch! Strong lines.
All the little details are important given the topic, and they're all there, so that's perfect.
The chorus is quite short at the moment. There might be room for another two lines ahead of the ones you have there if you wanted them.
Little things that catch me eye
And break my heart in two
Little things are everything
when that's all that's left of you
Very nice!

Owen,
One of these days I will catch you out!
Verse 4, which you noted, can be read two ways, either the things she left behind or more macabre, herself.
Read the song again but this time imagine he killed her.
The clue was in the introduction "The answer is your both right!".
My apologies for playing around, this is how I learn!
The short chorus was deliberate to get your views.
When would (if at all), a short chorus be used?
Thanks to all, love talking to you
Sid

Sid, I consider myself caught! I didn't pick the 2nd meaning at all, but there it is when you point it out. Very clever indeed!
A short chorus might work very well here, just as you have it. Probably need to hear it first to decide. You certainly don't want a long chorus given the long verses. It's more that the lines you have feel like they're lines 3 and 4 to me, they just seem to benefit from having something ahead of them. But as always, that's just one opinion.
