Lyric- Living This Hell of Loving You

Living This Hell of Loving You

Put my lips to the bottle where yours just were
Knowing where they’d rather be
Thirty years of friendship and foreplay
Lost dreams and fantasies

I can promise that I’ll think of you tonight
And a million times today
I can’t escape from the truth
I’m living this hell of loving you

Who knew that heaven could ever
Also feel like hell
I’m living with regret and yes
I only blame myself

There’s the night I missed that goodbye kiss
But I was too scared of all I had to lose
Now only words are left to help confess
I’m living this hell of loving you

They can call me a fool for holding on
For such a long long time
But I can’t help to think that what we have
Is part of the grand design

It may not be the same for you
As it’s always been for me
I’m living this hell of loving you
Our lost dreams and fantasies

Who knew that heaven could ever
Also feel like hell
I’m living with regret and yes
I only blame myself

There’s the night I missed that goodbye kiss
But I was too scared of all I had to lose
Now only words are left to help confess
I’m living this hell of loving you

Only words are left to help confess
I’m living this hell of loving you

  • I like the idea that loving someone can be both heaven and hell at the same time. I believe as a callow youth I experienced this! That was due to not telling the person how I was feeling, and I wonder if that is more generally the case. In this lyric, the narrator is confessing their feelings, but perhaps not confessing them directly would make it even more relatable and intense? Perhaps it's an inner dialog or a "practice" conversation that the narrator reveals is not actually happening somewhere in the lyric? Sort of a "one day I'll tell you but meanwhile I'm living...".

I would also think it is more likely in a younger couple than in more mature adults. The "Thirty years of friendship and foreplay" puts the lyric firmly in the latter category. That's definitely a point of difference with other songs, but it may be more relatable without that line. But that's absolutely your choice re what the song is about.

I'm not finding the rhythm of it in parts, but those can either fall into place, or be adjusted when set to music. Or you may already have it sorted in your head!

Those points made, I like the feel of the lyric. I think you have something poignant and worthwhile.

You are describing here a reality!!! hahaha Yes, I enjoyed your lyric, so balanced, they have a musical sense!!! So when music will dress it it will sound fantastic!!! Heaven and Hell, 2 sides of the mirror!

  • Owen, you’ve definitely gave me some food for thought. As always, a different perspective that is always helpful. Appreciate the feedback.
