Rockwell Life

Verse 1

They sell it like a Saturday in 1955

White fence, clean porch, everybody still alive

Apple pie cooling on a painted window sill

Dog pullin’ a red wagon up a picture-perfect hill

Smiles framed in gold, nobody outta line

No broke hearts, no debt, no overtime

Just church bells ringin’ through a cotton candy sky

That’s what they say life’s supposed to look like

Pre-Chorus

But my front yard’s got weeds

And my mailbox leans

And I ain’t seen perfect

Outside a magazine

Chorus

Life ain’t a Rockwell painting on a living room wall

It’s more like spilled beer in a last-call brawl

It’s a dog runnin’ loose, not pullin’ that wagon

It’s rust on the chrome and a check engine flashin’

They sell us a dream in red, white, and blue

But life’s got grease on its Sunday shoes

If that picture’s what it should be

Well hell — nobody painted me

Verse 2

Mama said, “Son, keep your chin up high”

Daddy said, “Work hard, you’ll be just fine”

I worked those hours, I paid those dues

Still got holes in my boots and a head full of news

Neighbors wave but they don’t look close

Everybody’s hidin’ what hurts the most

Pre-Chorus

We chase that frame

Try to fit that mold

But real life’s louder

And it ain’t controlled

Chorus

Life ain’t a Rockwell painting on a living room wall

It’s more like busted knuckles and a drywall hole

It’s a dog off leash in the middle of traffic

It’s love that’s messy and mostly tragic

They sell us a dream in red, white, and blue

But truth’s got dirt on its Sunday suit

If that picture’s what it should be

Then maybe real’s what’s meant for me

Bridge (half-spoken, your style)

Maybe life ain’t supposed to be spotless

Maybe it’s supposed to be honest

Final Chorus (lift)

Life ain’t a Rockwell painting on a living room wall

It’s cracked screens, missed calls, and learnin’ to crawl

It’s scars that show and stories you drag in

It’s love that stays when the shine ain’t happenin’

Yeah they can keep their red wagon dream

I’ll take the dents and the gasoline

If that picture’s what it should be

I’ll hang mine crooked — and let it be

i like this. You fooled me a bit, i thought it was going to be a feel good nostalgia song. then the pre chorus was a nice twist. then the dirty truth in the chorus. well played.

  • About the way it was in 1955 , after world war 2 , things were sweet

Now , we'll look around.... not so much . The character which is me , never felt life as a Rockwell painting

  • I like this a lot Elvis. Really gets the message across.

I think the Rockwell painting as a metaphor is inspired, and I love how you circle back with phrases like "nobody painted me".

Very visual, lots of details that build upon each other.

    Good stuff.

It's a cool angle . What has working my ass off for 52 years got me ? Not much , and brought a few tears thinking about mom and dad , which are dead at 76 . lucky I got a sense of humor on clothes falling off

    Thanks Owen
