Reflections (By Alyssa Womack)

A collaboration with the wonderful Alyssa Womack (QuoththeLlama over on the Muse forum). She wrote the most beautiful song about grief in the wake of her mothers death and very kindly allowed me to 'flesh it out' with her assistance. Alyssa is on vocals and acoustic guitar and wrote the song and lyrics - I arranged it and played everything else.

Reflections

I've been feeling like the mums you hung

On our old front porch

Like my roots dried out, and I'll grow no more

And I will never be quite like I was before

With all my sun dried petals drifting to the floor

Oh, I...

I have never looked so much like you

And looking in the mirror

Has never been so hard to do

I see you in my eyes, in my nose, in my smile

I see you and it steals my breath for a while

Well you can haunt every freckle

On this second-hand face

But what I've lost, reflections can't replace

I've been losing time and sleep

Thinking about your soul

How you won't come back, and you won't get old

Yeah, when you died something in me froze

But the birds still sing, and the grass still grows

Oh, I...

I have never felt a cut so deep

But I look in the mirror

And it's almost like you're here with me

I see you in my eyes, in my nose, in my smile

I see you and it steals my breath for a while

Well, you can haunt every freckle

On this second-hand face

But what I've lost, reflections can't replace

Now all we could have had is torn asunder

And I am here alone, afraid, and left to wonder

As my racing heartbeats crash like thunder

 And it drags me under

 And it drags me under

I see you in my eyes, in my nose, in my smile

I see you and it steals my breath for a while

Well, you can haunt every freckle

On this second-hand face

But what I've lost, reflections can't replace

I see you in my eyes, in my nose, in my smile

I see you and it steals my breath for a while

Well, you can haunt every freckle

On this second-hand face

But what I've lost, reflections can't replace

  • What a beautiful song. Every word cuts deep. It's so real and vulnerable and honest.

And I think you've added to it considerably with the backing instrumentation.

    Thanks for sharing this one.

  • A really nice track, CCB. I agree with all of Owen's laudatory comments. The song has heartfelt vocals, emotional lyrics, and a very good production. The song itself is well crafted and constructed. I enjoyed listening! Nice work to both of you!

If she'd ever consider it, I think Alyssa could perform a great slowed-down cover of "Seven Year Ache" by Rosanne Cash. Her nice style brought that oldie to mind, but in a dialed-back, melancholy way that would work well with a song like that. Anyway, I hope we can hear more from you both! 😀

  • Little long on radio time , But what I hear is well written . Very heartfelt song , some great lines

The naturalness in the voice mixed with feelings that we have all felt has moved me, it is a beautiful song as well as the lyrics, so good, , and the simple arrangement, the guitar and the violin, have taken me to a meadow, next to a cemetery that looks out over a valley!

    Beautiful job chicos

  • Obviously a very personal song. An absolutely wonderful vocal that's captures the emotion really well. A really nice arrangement too. The end is a bit abrupt for me but otherwise this is beautiful.😀

  • Hi all,

Thanks for your feedback. I'll be sure to pass it on to my collaborator. Alyssa is one of those special people who imbues their words with truth and beauty. I make gags about body parts.

  • Wow, the lyrics are so evocative, and the vocals beautifully done. This has a very personal feel, but it is easy to relate with too. I was tearing up as I listened. The music is a lovely compliment. A top-notch collaboration. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful lyric which really moved me, as did the melody and powerful vocals, and the swelling musical arrangement behind the chorus enhanced that emotional punch really well.

I felt the guitar after the bridge was a little busy. Also, the song is a little long. I wonder if it would be more effective either to stop after the first two lines of the last, quieter chorus or alternatively skip them and and go straight to...

Well, you can haunt every freckle

    Loved this!

  • Hi @Andrea

I completely agree on the lyrics, Alyssa has a way of creating truth that feels universal and as old as time, yet also fresh and insightful. We worked hard to get the vocals where they are so it's great to see her wonderful voice being appreciated.

    Hi @OnlyGavin

  • if you made it radio time , it might stand a chance on a pitch with them

  • if you can stand the heat of 100s of no's , Who knows

  • Hi @ElvisNash

Thanks for the suggestion. I passed the thought onto Alyssa. I think we're more "in it for the fun" but who knows? A couple of edits and a spot of tidying up... it's certainly conceivable. 👍️

    Cheers
