"Gods Always Broke "
Elvis wrote this one after getting hit with a hospital bill that felt like highway robbery — from a place preaching mercy while charging interest. The song came out of that moment when faith and finance clash hard — when you’re staring at a stack of invoices under a cross on the wall, wondering how something holy learned to keep score. It’s part confession, part protest, and all heart — a hymn for the overbilled and under-healed.

Verse 1
Preacher drives a Cadillac, tithes pay the note,
Choir sings hallelujah while the lights stay low.
Poor man’s praying for a miracle, bills past due,
He says “Lord, I’ll give you Sunday, but Monday’s on you.”
Chorus
‘Cause God’s always broke in a rich man’s town,
Holes in His pockets where the blessings fall down.
They sell salvation with a smile and a quote,
But love don’t pay the rent — and God’s always broke.
Post-Chorus
But He still loves the lost and the lonely,
Still hears every prayer we spoke,
Still gives it all — even when He’s broke.
Verse 2
Cross on the steeple got gold leaf paint,
Hospital prays before they hand you the claim.
Angels on credit, demons on loan,
Heaven keeps calling but there’s nobody home.
Chorus
Yeah, God’s always broke in a world gone blind,
Faith gets pawned for the dollar sign.
He gave us the truth, we sold what He spoke,
Now we’re cashing His checks — and God’s always broke.
Post-Chorus
But He still loves the lost and the lonely,
Still hears every prayer we spoke,
Still gives it all — even when He’s broke.
Bridge
Maybe grace is a currency we don’t understand,
Worth more than silver, can’t fit in our hands.
But we keep countin’ what we can’t own,
While the poorest heart sits on the highest throne.
Final Chorus / Outro
God’s always broke in the land of gold,
Still healing the lost, still saving souls.
If heaven had a wallet, it’d be filled with hope —
But hope don’t spend easy… and God’s always broke.
Post-Chorus (Final Fade)
He still loves the lost and the lonely,
Still hears every prayer we spoke,
Still gives it all — even when He’s broke.

God and me both ;).. doubt tho if god is white knuckling at the end of the month waiting for ss :).. You have the style nailed down. although I wonder how it would sound as country gospel :)

Why do you talk about yourself in the third person? Why do you say "Elvis wrote this one..."
Who are you if not?
And while you answer, I'll tell you about the lyrics, so rich in realities blessed by the hand that drowns the world in the name of whom I tried to save it.
There are so many wonderful lines, full of images; this one touched my heart.
'Cause God's always broke in a rich man's town,'
I wish crucifixes would disappear, that they would finally let Jesus hang and not keep him eternally crucified, suffering for the poverty of the eternally poor, like him.

I love the cynicism in this one, somewhat tempered by the post-chorus. I think it works really well
And the style is perfect. Good write!

Well I can't go full on George Carlin on this , so yes post chorus dampens the cynicism
Thanks Owen
