lyrics SS : music/vocals Ai

[verse 1]

Plane crashed, in an African desert,

only a nurse and me, got out of there.

Three days, walkin' in the blazin' sun.

tendin' my wounds, I looked after her.

[verse 2]

Told me her story, livin' in the outback,

clinic in a town called Alice Springs.

An only child, she trained as a nurse,

left, old enough, to spread her wings.

[chorus]

In an' out of consciousness

The hot air shimmered like glass

You begged me not to leave you

I said, I'm takin' you back to Alice.

[verse 3]

Found, friendly tribe, took us to town,

a U.N. search party was already there.

Tribe got scared, didn't hang around,

two weeks in hospital, got to know her.

[chorus]

In an' out of consciousness

The hot air shimmered like glass

You begged me not to leave you

I said, I'm takin' you back to Alice.

[verse 4]

A plane came to pick me up.

take me, back to London.

We promised to stay in touch,

never knew where she'd gone.

[chorus]

In an' out of consciousness

The hot air shimmered like glass

You begged me not to leave you

I said, I'm takin' you back to Alice.

[bridge]

Hot Australian desert, came into sight,

clinic was open, at this time of night.

The nurse, saw a shadow on the floor,

lookin', a man's figure stood at the door.

[final chorus]

In an' out of consciousness

The hot air shimmered like glass

You begged me not to leave you

I said, I'm takin' you back to Alice.

[outro]

I held her in my arms, years just fell away,

cryin', she made me swear I would stay.

Our tears mixed, I told her of my promise,

Alone in that desert, I'd take her back to Alice.

I did 30 years ago, wrote it, read it, closed it, moved on!

Thanks Elvis, yes, one of those you find Richard Chamberlain in, I guess!

Alice is what the locals call Alice Springs, in Central Australia. Not that small now, compared to when I was there 40 years ago.

Salt of the earth people though, tough but straight.

  • It does have a book or movie script feel to it, doesn't it? Quite the adventure with romance to boot. From Africa to London to Alice Springs.

There's a lot of phrases here you just down normally find in a song, like "UN Search party" - and that's a compliment not a criticism, it's hard to work those in to sound good as well as being relevant.

The chorus is strong, the hook is memorable and it contains my favorite line: The hot air shimmered like glass
