Feather in the Wind

I wrote this song in the key of Cmaj7, to give a mellow jazzy sound. I got the idea for the lyrics from one of my favorite James Taylor songs "Wandering"

it's getting kind of cold in Colorado

I think I'll head down to New Orléans

I've been from Key West to Juneau

a thousand points in-between

chorus-1

just give me a gypsy tailwind

a long stretch of highway and blue skies

someday I'll be coming back this way again

just to say hello and then goodbye

I worked the docks in Corpus Christie

I drove a hack in Louisville

I've got that ramblin' fever deep inside of me

I've got to see what lies beyond that hill

repeat C-1

Now, I'll be leaving in the morning

just as soon as my feet hits the floor

I can't say just where I'm going

it'll be someplace I've never been before

C-2

The time will come for my passing

but my journeys, they will never end

I'll be blowing down that eternal highway

like a feather in the wind

  • I like how all your lyrics tell a story..

  • Hey man , you could bump up vocals a tad , Hard to hear . Ya got some great descriptive lines in there

  • First thing I thought of was the lyrics to "All my love" by Led Zeppelin. "To chase a feather in the wind".

The instrumental parts sounds a bit like Steely Dan. I'm not liking the vocals. Too rough. Maybe change the vocalist?

  • "Gypsy tailwind" would be another good name for this one.

Got a classic feel to it, I love all the imagery.

That was just brilliant, absolutlely loved it. Your style of vocals immediately took me back to Lee Marvin's 'Wanderin' Star" but your's was even better, the jazz feel was pure genius and the music perfect. I did enjoy this a lot Toney, thank you so much for sharing.

  • @Cove Toney, I always love your songs! This one's no different in that respect. Love your super laid-back on this one especially. Just right, babe! And good on you for having been around; that's really cool!

@robwills That's one of the voices in my head singing this. I try to ignore him, but he's a persistent old bastard.

  • The uke and the lead guitar do give it a jazzy feel which is pleasing on the ear. The vocal seems almost more spoken than sung, very laid back in keeping with the jazzy feel.

I don't think I've ever heard of the key of Cmaj7.

@RainyDayMan Thanks for your comment and recommendation. I think I will change the title to Gypsy tailwind and change the last line to" like a gypsy tailwind" Did you hear the uke in this?

@HummerWisdom, Thaks so much Renee! "And good on you for having been around" I made up the character. I did live and work in New Orleans for a year or so in the late seventies I've worked in a few other places. Most of my traveling was when I was in the Air Force.

@OnlyGavin Thank You Gavin! "I don't think I've ever heard of the key of Cmaj7." LOL! I don't know why I wrote that, but since I did, I also have one in the key of Dsus4!
