Blame It On God

Thank you so much for the compliments on the lyric. Now, here's the song; stripped down but nonetheless. Thank you for giving it a listen ===> https://soundcloud.com/reneelachapelle/blame-it-on-god

BLAME IT ON GOD

[Verse 1]

Don’t know how He takes it

Why He doesn’t turn me to dust

Hatin’ on the one who loves me

When He’s the one to trust

And I hate myself for saying:

‘God dammit’ when I do

I should be praying instead

When I’m feeling blue

[Chorus 1]

When you’re out ‘a straw-men

Can’t go through it again

The most perfect patsy there’s ever been:

Blame it on God

Blame it on God

[Verse 2]

He’s slippery, that ol’ snake

Turning things upside down

Comes off the angel of light

The Devil’s what you found

I know I don’t deserve it

Don’t deserve a second shot

I should be struck by lightening

But the bad guy, God’s not

[Chorus 1]

When you’re out ‘a straw-men

Can’t go through it again

The most perfect patsy there’s ever been:

Blame it on God

Blame it on God

[Bridge]

Seems the whole world blames it on God

It’s an epidemic

Seems the whole world blames it on God

It’s schizophrenic

[Verse 3]

Don’t know how He takes it

Why He doesn’t turn me to dust

Hatin’ on the one who loves me

When He’s the one to trust

And I hate myself for saying:

‘God dammit’ when I do

I should be praying instead

Knowing He’ll see me through

[Chorus 2]

When you’re out ‘a straw-men

Can’t go through it again

The most perfect patsy there’s ever been:

Blame it on God, why do we

Blame it on God?

Blame it on God, why do we

Blame it on God?

[Chorus/Tag]

When you’re out ‘a straw-men

Can’t go through it again

The most perfect patsy there’s ever been:

Blame it on God

Blame it on God

Go ahead an’ blame it on God all you want to

But God knows better, yeah-ee-yeh

God Knows Better.

  • Brilliant, love it, really good vibe to the music and well sung too.

    Excellent piece of work Renee!

    Cosideration: To improve the flow in the bridge;

    [Bridge]

The whole world blames it on God

    Seems, it’s an epidemic

The whole world blames it on God

    Seems, it’s also schizophrenic

    Well done,

    Sid

  • Love your suggestions as usual, Sid! Let me play around with it. Thanks so much,

    Renee

  • Renee, I'm going to throw one at you from left field.

The lyric here is about inner conflict, so maybe try to reflect that in the music? Maybe a little slower with more minor chords? Just a thought.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with your current version! And this is a highly personal song, so you should follow the route that feels right to you.

@RainyDayMan you're probably right. The music part screws me every time. I'm not much on the music. While I know a few chords, I'm very basic on the guitar but yeah, I agree this song should be more a ballad. I'm so used to using the 6th for the minor and beyond that I'm like, DUH!

If ya'd like to throw me a progression, I can try and work with it. I'm good with Am, Em, Dm (sometimes) Bm, I suck at 'cuz it's easiest played as a bar chord of which I suck at....so, whatcha got?! 🤣

  • Ha! Well, try this one out and see if it inspires you. You don't have to follow it verbatim: Em - D - Am7 - C

Am7 is even easier than Am, you can easily look it up on the web.

  • BTW, Barre Chords are your friend. They open up the whole neck to you. A barre chord Bm is just an Am chord moved up 2 frets (that's what the barre does). And if you can move it up 2 frets, then why not 3 or 4 or 10? Suddenly you know a dozen chords all the same shape just moved along the fretboard. Great value for money! Yes, they can be tricky to learn and a bit hard on the fingers, but well worth it.

@RainyDayMan here's my reason and my excuse. I'm older and suffer with arthritis and it's in my hands as well. My right index finger is bent so badly that I drop the pick sometimes. But yes, I agree Barre Chords are a friend. And yes, I can play them but I just choose not to (mostly). And I know I'm only hurting my songs. At times I get flooded with lyrics as they come like an avalanche. And then when they don't come I should be working on honing my guitar skills which I don't do. I get lazy and watch TV. 🤣

And I was just playing around with the progression. I love it! But thinking of going with Am vs. Am7 as I like the sound of it better. Lemme see what I can do and thank you for caring enough!

  • Arthritis is a curse! I can well imagine it limiting what you can do. I am going to check out the new version now.

  • @RainyDayMan indeed a curse. My grandmother had it and now I know how she felt. Drags you down; chronic pain.

    Thanks for your empathy,

    Renee

@sidshovel & @RainyDayMan THANK YOU again for your feedback on this song. I've used both your ideas. Tho', Rainy Day, in the Chorus I just swapped out the Em for a G to start out the chorus. Your 'C' idea was great but it wasn't working for me. I realize the chorus is very similar to the verses but it's what worked best for me. Also, the bridge now starts on a Bm (Barre chord, best my fingers could do). Also, I finger-picked based upon your feeling for a softer tone; truly helped! Dang! Just realized I didn't include an Instrumental section; another time! 😊

A HUGE thank you as I'm really enjoying playing this song now.

    Truly,

    Renee

    For another listen ====> https://soundcloud.com/reneelachapelle/blame-it-on-god

  • Very good! Yep, there's just enough variation in the chorus to make it feel different, and the Bridge hits harder now too. Good choices on your part.

I like the finger picking, but as you know that's my kind of song!

No more suggestions from me, feels tight as it is.

    Make me 😊 thanks again, @RainyDayMan !

    You are truly a blessing,

And don't get too excited about the finger-picking; it's the only pattern I know, pretty much, lol!

Well I didn't get to hear the previous versions, but I definitely think RDM's chord suggestions helped as it sounds very melancholy and reflective, exactly how you'd want it to be for something this personal. Setting aside my own personal views on religion, it's a really nice song. Your vocals are sounding as soulful as ever. Great job!

On a side note though, I can't believe this comment section is how I found out Sid left the site. That's really sad to hear, I hope he's doing okay.
