What is your favorite song that has no real consensus on what it's about?

I'll start with one of mine. Between the Bars - Elliott Smith.

This is one of his most popular songs that I have always interpreted as the bottle of alcohol having a conversation with the person. I had a conversation with a friend who is also a huge Elliott fan who thinks its got a different meaning (my interpretation being the most common one I think)

Such a beautifully written song if you haven't heard it. I think most if not all of Elliotts songs can be interpreted in multiple ways as he was a true master of his craft but this one I think has the strongest dispute.

  • Mr Tambourine Man by Dylan.

There are more theories than words in the song. Same as American Pie and A Horse with no Name.

I often wonder whether the writer is sitting in a corner having a good ol' chuckle reading the theories.

My own theory is that he was off his head on acid an ' saw a guy with a tambourine the size of a bin lid an' took it from there.

  • @OutOfTowner Agreed on that interpretation - I think it's pretty blatant, even.

@sidshovel One of my favorite Dylan lines is in that one: "And but for the sky, there are no fences facing." I mean, what a magnificently poetic way to say "the sky's the limit." He's an absolute wonder of a writer, 60+ years and counting.

  • 60+ he's 83, but technically you're correct, an' still a great writer!

  • I was referring to his 60+ years of writing masterpieces.

  • Can't argue with that!

  • Just thinkin' on those numbers, I wonder if Dylan holds the record for the longest span of songwriting?

Anyone know of somebody else who beats him?

  • Kiss From a Rose - By Seal

In Your Eyesl - By Robert Palmer

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds -- Beatles

My Back Pages -- Dylan and as performed by The Byrds

    Carefree Highway -- Gordon Lightfoot

Tuesday's Dead -- Bitterblue -- Morning Has Broken -- All by Cat Stevens

  • Well technically Cat Stevens didn't write Morning Has Broken, only did an arrangement of it. Eleanor Farjeon wrote it. Swap it for Longer Boats!

  • Why do you want to understand it for ? Then you have to think about the deep meaning on a trip to Walmart to buy Chili
