Just my luck, I've gotta lifetime left to live.

All lyrics are mine, vocals and music are Ai generated.

This song is linked to a discussion on the discussions board titled AI EXPERIMENT by RDM

If you haven't already, head off over and read the article. Contributions by some of the most experienced and best musicians on the forum on the subject of Ai. Some excellent talking points and insights.

Basically, I offer up this song as a lyrical cadaver to be picked and probed by anyone on the forum. Musicians dissect the innards and comment on the musical/vocal aspects of this song. Try to highlight anything you think is wrong, good, average or rubbish. I don't know anything about music but I'll start it off by making my observations on what was in my mind when I wrote it and what I wanted from Ai.

[intro]

[verse 1]

A tired picture that's faded and worn,

a goodbye note all creased and torn.

Those memories are small and few,

That's all that I've got left from you.

[verse 2]

When I think on now, I should've guessed,

those pitying looks, my hand caressed.

The talk that stopped when I came into a room,

could've cut the silence with a rusty spoon.

[chorus]

You're gone and your never comin' back,

took me an' now I've nothing more to give.

Pain never goes away, hurts every single day,

Just my luck, I've gotta lifetime left to live.

[verse 3]

The picture against a bottle of wine,

toast your health while killin' mine.

You could've done it right, an' hit me with your car,

Now my heart's in pieces, an' I can feel the scars.

[chorus]

You're gone and your never comin' back,

took me an' now I've nothing more to give.

Pain never goes away, hurts every single day,

Just my luck, I've gotta lifetime left to live.

[bridge]

It had to be my best friend, it couldn't be a stranger,

quietly tearing us apart, like a dog in a manger.

[chorus]

You're gone and your never comin' back,

took me an' now I've nothing more to give.

Pain never goes away, hurts every single day,

Just my luck, I've gotta lifetime left to live.

[outro]

Pain never goes away, hurts every single day,

Just my luck, I've gotta lifetime left to live.

Just my luck, I've gotta lifetime left to live.

  • I think AI is a gift to people that don't sing or play guitar

You could probably do open mikes with a boom box

    Good job Sid

  • Well, if you hadn't told us that this was AI generated, I'd have been completely taken in. I have to be honest and say that musically I'm not hearing anything wrong with this. Maybe the voices give the game away a bit at times, but I'm really nit picking when I say that. Elvis has a good point about it being a gift to those who don't sing or play. It doesn't change my views about AI really but, yeah, very well done Sid.😀

  • As you've noted elsewhere, @sidshovel, I think it gets the emphasis on some of the phrases wrong - or at least not where a person would put them.

The intro is a bit rough, and it seems to get mixed up on the final chorus after the bridge - though that could easily be edited and replaced with an earlier one.

I like the outro, and I think it's got the overall structure and mood right for the song. I like the slow simple verses with the build on the chorus.

But this is the worst these tools will ever be. From now on, they will only improve.

Thanks guys for sharing your comments. Ai is a great tool and a godsend for lyricists to play with.

I am though, getting less concerned the more I use it. On a superficial level everything is there, vocals, music, words.

However, it is more of a case of "The dog that didn’t bark", rather what isn't there.

It misses those human and therefore singular elements, e.g. stress, emotion, pause, emphasis.

When I listen to Elvis's work tape of "Don't blame me" or Jimmy LaFave's "Cafe in the Rain", those elements come across clearly. I can't say the same for Ai, a lot are either missing, in the wrong place or the timings not right. Owen mentioned the word structured, IMO in its current form is a little too structured. An e-book put to Musak, functional but not brilliant.

    Invaluable insights guys, thank you.

    Sid

Robots don't have a heart or soul yet, They're not having a bad day or good day , They're not thinking she left me back in 1983 to grasp the emotion to put in songs.

I imagine after fine tuning they'll get them to artificially feel them emotions , of course just a guess Sid

Elvis, you hit the nail on the head! The interplay between those emotions are what make us human, it provides the well of experience that we draw from to formulate and express our feelings. This, I believe, will be their "bridge too far."

  • Townes Van Zandt died of a broken heart , No robot will ever duplicate that emotion
