Bar Room In The Snow

A winter tale. Several winters ago in Portland Or a storm was brewing off the coast.  The local weather man said not to worry it was too warm for snow.  My cousin who lives out there was relaying the story to me as it unfolded...

Guitar Intro

Thank God for whiskey to warm a frozen soul

And thank you Lord for bar rooms in the snow

There’s a man on TV he gets paid for being wrong

Said it wouldn’t snow here in Portland

I got stuck on the highway in two feet don’t you know

Might as well be living back in Boston

Somebody said on the radio stay off of the roads

Too late now we’re jammed up on the interstate

Break

I got out started walking before I froze alone

I heard music coming from a honkytonk

A tune to guide me down that snowy road

Something bout a cold cold heart

Everybody saw me leaving ditched their cars and came along

We headed out towards that country song

Break

The bar tender got wide eyed when we all come through the door

I said the weatherman sent us said to have a drink on him

Shots all around and beers to chase em through.

Thank you God for dive bars in the snow

Break

Now Portland ain’t like Boston we don’t know what to do

When winter makes the weatherman a fool

The whole town closes down but if you’re stuck there in your car

You can always find an open dive bar

Thank God for whiskey to warm a frozen soul

And thank you Lord for bar rooms in the snow

Thank God for the weatherman when he don’t get it right

He should be buying shots and beers all night

All niiiiiiiiight

Wow, this song takes me back. reminds me of early Hee-Haw or Sonny and Cher show. If you could get two other guys to harmonize, you would have the kingston trio. This song did give me an idea, just wonder how the kingston trio would sound over a house beat :)

cool song. funny, nice acoustic guitar playing.

if you were there you'd have the whole place singing along. 👍️

  • I can so imagine this going down a treat at an open mic or something like that.

    Just fun to listen to!

  • I love this tale and how this song is spun - agree it would be great live - it's hard to write a ditty like this - great job

Haven't listened yet. But I'm a fan of the lyric. Portland is 40 miles north of me. There are a couple of sayings about weathermen here.

    1. All you have to know to be a weatherman 90% of the time here is how to say "Partly cloudy with a chance of rain."

    2. Only fools and tourists predict the weather here. If you've been here a long time, it's best not to predict.

I know they are contradictory, but they are still kind of fun. Now I'll go have a listen.
