Take Him Down From That Cross

Good day, Songsters! Been working on this one on and off these past few weeks. Tweaked it today, re-sung it. A bit on the lengthy side but the last version was too crammed. May work on it more to shorten it by 30 seconds or so, but for now....

I understand there will be others with alternative views and I respect those, but I am only looking for feedback on the song itself, not a debate on the topic. Thank you for respecting my wishes.

May you have a blessed day,

Renee

TAKE HIM DOWN FROM THAT CROSS

[Verse 1]

Take Him down from that cross

Can’t you see He’s the King?

That King who finished what He started

Take Him down from that cross

Can’t you see He’s the King?

A king not of the dearly departed

[Chorus]

He’s the King of kings

He’s not a baby

He doesn’t need coddling

From Mother Mary

He’s the King of kings

He’s here and now

Take Him down from that cross

It hurts Him and how

[Verse 2]

Put Him up on His throne

Kneel down an’ kiss His feet

Can’t you hear Him calling your name?

Put Him up on His throne

Can’t hear His heartbeat?

Once you know Him, you’re never the same, ‘cuz

[Chorus]

He’s the King of kings

He’s not a baby

He doesn’t need coddling

From Mother Mary

He’s the King of kings

He’s here and now

Take Him down from that cross

It hurts Him and how

[Instrumental]

Take Him down from that cross

Put Him up on His throne

Take Him down from that cross

Roll away that stone

[Verse 1 Repeats]

Take Him down from that cross

Can’t you see He’s the King?

That King who finished what He started

Take Him down from that cross

Can’t you see He’s the King?

A king not of the dearly departed, and

[Chorus]

He’s the King of kings

He’s not a baby

He doesn’t need coddling

From Mother Mary

He’s the King of kings

He’s here and now

Take Him down from that cross

It hurts Him and how

  • @HummerWisdom - speaks from the heart as always. I would change the [verse 1 - repeats] make it a bridge and change some of words to emote something else to expand on your theme...

  • @bhengen thank you for your suggestion. Don't know about a Bridge for this song, but yes, I could come in with something different for V3 or dump it altogether as it stands now, it's a repeat of V1. That would certainly shorten the song by the length I'm looking for. And while that little section following the so-called 'Instrumental' is not a bridge, musically I think it serves somewhat as a bridge which could go into the final chorus. Let me ponder it.

    Thank you,

    Renee

  • @HummerWisdom - you are speaking your conviction. your soul. picture yourself standing by the cross as they are taking jesus, down. what would you be feeling?

  • Hey there Hummer....... I love a good spiritual. I do believe Jesus would appreciate the sentiment, to remember Him up there on the cross as a sign of his devotion to saving us from the ruins of sin. I fear, if we take him down, we will forget.

But, hey... keep it up. I love what you are doing!

  • Certainly an unusual angle. If I understand you correctly, the message is that we should move away from the traditional symbolism of Christ on the cross and the infant Jesus and focus entirely on Christ enthroned in Heaven. Many Christians might feel otherwise, of course. The image of the crucified Jesus is one that many find profoundly moving. I do, and I'm not really religious. That said, I appreciate just how unusual this idea is, and it makes for an interesting lyric.

It's well written, in my opinion, especially the chorus.

  • I think these kind of songs shine when they come from the heart. It's not about spit and polish, it's about faith and sincerity. As such, I wouldn't change a thing.

I agree with the sentiments and comments made by the others.

A very good piece indeed, different in its approach and better for it.

My only minor comment would be the use of the word coddling.

It just kept sticking in my brain, like a bump on a smooth surface.

Doesn't detract from the song and since no one else mentioned it!

I enjoyed the song very much Renee, well done.

And thank you for using the polite forewarning, very thoughtful of you.

  • Renee, I felt like your note asking only for feedback on the song needed to stand a little more, so I've taken the liberty of putting it in bold, hope you don't mind. This is the kind of thing we'll learn as we going along.

Yes that works better, good thought

I think the context he is singing about is as if he is back in that time period talking to the people who actually put Jesus on the cross and not so much to us in the present day.

Great song, HummerWisdom. It's obvious you've put your heart and soul into this song.
