Coe
I just recently finished this one up, it's been in my head for years. I'm curious to know if anyone thinks I am in danger of breaking copyright laws by using some lines from his songs in this tribute.

Coe
© 2024 Barry Williams Lyrics
Music and vocals by AI
He came up through the outlaw years.
Hid his smile behind a beard.
The ink that deeply stained his skin,
Told who he was and where he'd been.
He spent his life on the road, searching for his soul.
He lost it in Nashville, found it in Austin, sold it in New Mexico
He could bend them strings,
Sing about some things,
Made you feel like you were there.
Couldn’t bring himself,
Not to be himself,
and never cut his hair
Waylon, Willie, Kris and Cash
All burned but didn't crash
While he played the honky Tonks
if that ain't country, I'll kiss your ass
He could bend them strings
Sing about some things
Made you feel like you were there
But David Allen Coe my friends
Would never cut his hair.
Played Panheads Forever
Took a ride with a stranger
Made you feel like - you were there
Stayed true to his roots
Right down to his boots
And sang his own brand of the blues

Naw that's a common thing in songwriting using lines from other songs, they do it all the time , Coe's pretty crazy . But I've never walked on water to judge him
Good song man

@bhengen That's actually a line from one of his songs that I ripped off and was worried about.
@ElvisNash Yeah, I'm in no position to judge anyone, but you're right he is not your conventional artist, and I guess that is the point of the song. He did and said what he wanted to and wouldn't conform to the norm.

Heads Carolina tails calif , I forgot the artist name , it was hit before he did it . They stole the the whole song , So I would not worry about your song . Well back in the day Coe was out of the box on ideas, raised in the Deep South , different era than now

@ElvisNash He was raised in Ohio but always acted like he was from the south. Northern Ohio at that. Not sure if he is still touring, if he is I may go see him during bike week next month here in Daytona, the job I'm doing right now is close to the Iron Horse where he always plays.

Ahh , Well he acts like he's from the Deep South lol . He must be getting up there in age , still touring

That's one cool song Barry, to be honest, never heard of the guy. Didn't matter, you drew a perfect picture in your words, the image jumped out.
Another excellent CW song Barry, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Good choice of music an' vocals to accompany the words too, you really know your way around the Ai tool.
Thanks a lot for sharing, appreciated.

@ElvisNash yeah if memory serves me I believe he was born around 1938 so he may be there but I doubt he's still performing.0
-
@sidshovel his real heyday was back in the 70's and 80's and even then other than a couple hits he never really made the big time like Waylon, Willie, and Cash, but that had more to do with his attitude in my opinion. That's what I meant by would never cut his hair. He was wild, and would not pretend to be tame.0
-
I don't know , I haven't followed him in years , one of the last outlaw guys. He'd be 87 . There's a whole bio on him , in prison early age . I guess he was even to outlaw for outlaws like Willie and Waylon

That's a cool song, and the music came out really well.
I don't know the ins and outs of copyright law, but I'm guessing it's only going to become an issue if there's money on the table!

Hi Barry , I made it to TSF just in time to play your song pretty cool!

My memory is a bit foggy , some publisher was looking for songs for Coe about 7 years ago , I don't remember if I sent them one or not . He's 85 and still kicking lol
1 -
@Art welcome back brother!0
-
@ElvisNash I imagine he's pretty well preserved with the way he lived and all.0
-
Half fictional really how he lived probably , hard to say . You can't believe anything on the net . Different era on the music scene. The labels called it outlaw music cuz they wanted to sell records , at least how the story goes

I agree it was a marketing thing, I bought the Outlaw album myself so it worked, but Coe was not really part of that pack. In my mind Coe and Johnny Paycheck were the true Outlaws of that era with the exception of maybe Waylon he was pretty raw. Coe could be vulgar and that didn't endear him to Nashville at all.0
-
Well he was in out of jail and trouble . for a guy with a poor background , he did pretty good . Outlaw meant not the vanilla sound of Nashville at the time , a few of them did that back then , Wille, Waylon ect. probably a few today also . Drugs sex and rock and roll back then like rock bands lol

Hi Barry. Love your tune through and through! I think it's okay to use an artists lines here and there, especially when the song is a tribute to them. If you want, you can put the lines in quotation or semi-quotes (don't know which is correct) to show that you're using his lines. Love the guitar-work!

@Renee I don't know how long it will take, or if it will even happen but I have some friends who said they would try to get this to DAC to see what he thinks. If it's a problem, I doubt he will be shy about sharing his opinion. I'm really happy you liked it! Yeah, the guitar work.. The music makes this song better than the lyrics ever could.0
-
They do that all the time , Song titles of the artist on a song about the artist , its a common trick of song writers
0 -
Guess it's true what they say... There really is nothing new under the sun.
We will just have to settle with looking at something from a different view.
0 -
Thats not really a way to look at it , it just shows some song smithing by doing that . I did the same thing in a song were recording . what would George Strait do , some of his songs . Marina Del Rey , ect
1 -
LOL I thought that's what I said

Well that's the net for ya , coomucation problems lol. Well jealousy is the mother of invention . So copying what has worked before is pretty smart
