It’s not lonely at the Bottom - Lyric only

Barry
Barry Florida

I'm open to suggestions on this one, it's been knocking around in my head for a long time, just now writing it down again.

It’s not lonely at the Bottom

Barry Williams 2025

I know a man who is quite wealthy

But he always looks so sad

Always worried about keeping

All the things he had to have.

For all his prized possessions

And the status that they brought

He really is quite lonely

It’s truly lonely at the top

It’s not lonely at the bottom

All my friends are here

Laughing, joking, cutting up,

A loving lively atmosphere

It’s not lonely at the bottom

We all cast our cares away

All our worries are forgotten

We’re living life just for today

There’s a woman who has a husband

and she is wife number five

She spends her life going shopping

Because she feels dead inside

He gives her what she wants

But never what she needs

He’s too busy getting more

Soon she too will set him free

It’s not lonely at the bottom

All my friends are here

Laughing, joking, cutting up,

A loving lively atmosphere

It’s not lonely at the bottom

We all cast our cares away

All our worries are forgotten

We’re living life just for today

Sometimes while chasing more

We forget the real prize

When we lose what we wanted

The top’s not - worth the price

It’s not lonely at the bottom

All my friends are here

Laughing, joking, cutting up,

A loving lively atmosphere

It’s not lonely at the bottom

We all cast our cares away

All our worries are forgotten

We’re living life just for today

Very good song, excellent message crafted well

    Suggestion:

The top’s not - worth the price

    It's only then, we realize

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I think the overall structure is all there. I like the concept.

    A couple of suggestions:

I know a man who is quite wealthy → I know a man who's flush with cash (or something colloquial )

Always worried about keeping → Always worried about holding on to

A loving lively atmosphere → And what we got, we share

  • Thank you all for the suggestions, I only had the first two lines of the chorus and wrote rest in about 15 minutes, so with your suggestions, this one will morph into something better than it is.

Excellent lyrics Barry and man, can I relate. As was reading this a bell went off.

I came into a lot of money

    one hundred grand and more

but I didn't know how to handle it

I was so used to being poor

I went on a spending spree

and squandered 'til I was broke

now I'm right back where I was

before my rich aunt had that stroke

But it's not so lonely at the bottom

all my friends are here......just a thought

Thank you all for your comments, and suggestions, man I love this forum. I've made some changes to the lyric and it's still a work in progress so feel free to tear it down. Changed lines are in bold.

I'm trying to keep this on the husband-and-wife theme because I know these people.

I know a man whose got it all

But he always looks so sad

    Always stressed about keeping

All the things he had to have.

    For all his prized possessions

And the status that they brought

He seems to be quite lonely

Must be lonely at the top

It’s not lonely at the bottom

    All my friends are here

    we all enjoy each other

    A loving lively atmosphere

It’s not lonely at the bottom

    We cast our cares away

    All our worries are forgotten

We’re living life just for today

    Mr. Lonely has a woman

She is - wife number five

    She spends her time shopping

As she tries to feel alive

He gives her what she wants

    But never what she needs

    He’s too busy chasing things

Soon she will set him free

It’s not lonely at the bottom

    All my friends are here

    we all enjoy each other

    A loving lively atmosphere

It’s not lonely at the bottom

    We cast our cares away

    All our worries are forgotten

We’re living life just for today

If we spend our time chasing

    the things money can buy

    we can lose everything

that really matters in this life

It’s not lonely at the bottom

    All my friends are here

    we all enjoy each other

    A loving lively atmosphere

It’s not lonely at the bottom

    We cast our cares away

    All our worries are forgotten

We’re living life just for today

  • I ran it by Suno to see what it sounded like, in ten tries this was the best one to my ears. I think it still needs some trimming, and straightening.

  • @Barry . I think this melody works. I especially like the animals around the candles
  • I think I'm over this one. You ever get that way with a song?

Time to let this fade into oblivion, I'd delete it if I could.

Lifes too short to write bad songs, you either feel it or you don't.

  • I like the edits you did, I think you've improved it.

You might try "He’s too busy chasing things" > "He’s too busy chasing other things" depending on how it fits the meter.

I'm not very competent with the AI music generators, so the frustrating thing for me is that you can't iteratively improve it. It feels like you have to start over and take pot luck again rather than refining what you already have. But maybe that's the driver!

Don't throw it away. Put it in a drawer and walk away if you need to. You might pick it up in a year's time and it suddenly clicks, or gives you a better idea. They're all works in progress until you call them done, and you don't have to rate works in progress.

Barry, if you don't want it, can I have it! It's a wonderful song which I would have been proud to have written.

An excellent piece of work, that deserves to be shared, As writers, we get too close to our work and see every nuanced fault, real and imagined. Let your baby go out into the big world, it will prosper and grow.

You are extremely talented Barry, promise to share your songs and give the rest of us a chance to learn before you toss it in a drawer.

Okay I'm finally happy with the lyric, and the I Cloud Band and I got on the same page. Who knew what I was looking for was Folk Metal? https://www.reverbnation.com/barrywilliams/song/34841552-its-not-lonely-at-the-bottom

  • @Barry - i like this tune. the AI really does a great job emoting

  • Thanks Bill, I guess emoting is what Folk Metal brings to the ride. I am pleased with how it turned out.

I suppose you want your song back now, Mr Williams!

Really glad you took it out the drawer Barry, I could tell it was a good 'un from the lyrics.

That came out very well! So that's Folk Metal huh? Turns out I like Folk Metal!

And that ending with the major chord, nice! Tierce de Picardie!

  • Tierce de Picardie!? You know I had to google that lol, I didn’t know what it was called but I like the way it sounded.
  • @Barry I'm late to the party. Don't know how I missed this one. I can see you've taken the time to get it just right; love it! Love the theme and the contrast between the top and the bottom. You've eloquently made the bottom the top!

And AI did a nice job to boot!

  • I should be working , but this sounds really good man

  • @Barry that oughta be your next song, something like Free Time...gimme some free time, free time, baby....LOL! 😍
