Since I moved to Florida, I have met this guy several times. Not sure on a title, this has been rattling around for a while it's time to share it.

Redneck Born?

© 2024 Barry Williams

V1

I'm a redneck rabble rousing,

wild child of the south

I like sitting on the front porch, ( picking on the front porch?)

after the sun goes down

Raised on grits and gravy,

sweet tea, n homemade wine

(Spoken)

I like dirt roads with fishing holes, n having a goodtime

Chorus

Yea that's me --------------

I'm redneck born and rebel free

V2

On Saturday's I raise some hell,

on Sunday's I believe

If redneckness is a sickness,

then I love my disease

I like to crank all 3 Hanks,

Skynyrd, and both the Keiths

(Spoken)

I like mud bogs, n hunting hogs, n I don't wear no sleeves

Chorus

Yea that's me-------------

I'm redneck born and rebel free

V3

Now if you ain't from Dixie,

might be hard to comprehend

What it means to me,

for me to be, from here in Dixieland

Ya see I love my life, and I love my wife, and I love my family

(Spoken)

The roots run deep, down underneath this Dixie family tree

Chorus

Yea that's me-----------------

I'm redneck born and rebel free.

@Barry I like "Redneck Born and Rebel Free" for a title . . or just Redneck Born as you have it. Also, I prefer in V2 "picking on the front porch" as it's more visual. Truly love many lines in this lyric; very visual. I'd say you're off to a great start.

You could say "Pickin' my guitar (or banjo) on the front porch" leaving out, of course 'I like'. Just more visual.

I hope I've been helpful in some way,

    Renee

  • Hi Barry,

These are great lyrics, which deserve to be great song.

If I may offer some suggestions to help, (use or lose).

    Title: Redneck Rebel

    "Pickin' on the porch"

Contract those words ending in (ing), "in'", aligns better with the Southern feel.

    Chorus

    "Yea that's me --------------

I'm redneck born and rebel free"

    Chorus

    Yea that's me --------------

    Redneck Rebel, born and free

roots run deep, down underneath, --roots run deep, down 'neath

Ya see, I love my life, an' ma wife, and I love my family

A few suggestions to give you a feel, hope it helps you in some way.

    Sid

  • Looking good Barry! great hook and title.

Like the others, I prefer "picking on the porch" (for the alliteration)

You might try: then I love my disease → then I'm lovin' my disease (depending on the fit to music)

For the chorus just a thought:

    They call me redneck

    Yea that's me-------------

I'm redneck born and rebel free

  • Renee, Sid, and Owen, thank you all for the suggestions and the encouragement.

I will be using pickin' on the front porch and making the change to drop the ing. Drop inG tuning if you will lol.

I also love the change to "I'm lovin' my disease - Dropping the word "then" also it fits my melody,

and the change from down underneath to down beneath, it says the same thing and line doesn't feel as rushed.

Thank you all for helping me to make some improvements to this. Sometimes sharing something you wrote can be a little un-nerving, especially since it's been a while since I did.

I made this change as well since I use the word family in the very next line "I love my life, I love my wife, and I love being free"

Changes to the lyric are in bold
