Artistic expression - my rambling observations

is there a wrong or right way to create any piece of work, regardless if it's artwork, poetry, music or writing a novel. No, it's all a creative process, with the end goal to resonate, good or bad with the end user to borrow an IT term. When i create a piece of artwork, the subject determines which medium I use.. It may be oils, acrylic or graphite. The same goes for music. it doesn't matter if you sit on a stool in a bar with a guitar and amp, sit amongst session players, sit in your bedroom with a DAW and mixer, or use AI. At the end of the day, it's about the creative process. Look at the Bee Gees, for every generation, they adapted. Going back to to 57', they embraced all genres. Except for punk.. that would have been interesting. I can only imagine, Barry Gib doing the worm :). or the vocal harmonies to the song Code Blue by TSOL. or beat on the brat by the Ramones :). Did they stick with one genre? No, they used their creativity to express themselves. @IronKnee just posted a controversial a song to mixed reviews.. Good for him.. I noticed in his playlist, there are at least one where he used Suno.. To be honest, I only listed to two more songs as I have a short attention span. Good for him for testing the waters. .As artists that's what we do.. Whether he continues to use AI or not, his choice, should he continue to use AI? again, his choice.. Take for example, @HummerWisdom - Renee has expressed a disinterest in using AI.. I respect her decision and her reasoning for not wanting to use AI. Is she a lesser person or lesser artist for not wanting to use AI? Not at all.. She feels, as an artist, it's not how she wants to present her voice. Personally, and i've stated this to her, using AI in her case will lose the rawness and vulnerability of her music. At then end of the day we are all storytellers, regardless of the medium or vehicle we to use to tell the story.. THERE IS NO WRONG OR RIGHT way to tell your story. However, to be dismissive of somebody using whatever medium they chose to tell their story, is simply misguided. My late wife and I used to go to a restaurant where. above the cash register was this sign. "Never put yourself upon a pedestal, only God sits that high", rings true in this case..

@ElvisNash - you would have to admit, that it would be funny to see the gibb brothers slam dancing :)

I don't think anyone, including me has a record deal , Were talking about posting AI songs or live tracks to music forums .
its just a song . I get a kick out of AI songs , pretty amazing what robots can do . Its also enjoyable ( if the song don't suck ) to produce songs with session players and go to the studio and lay it down . You really don't know what you have until it's done .

@ElvisNash - what Im referring to were comments made by some using AI in general and not just posting..

I really don't care , it's new technology . Whatever I sing has nothing to do with songwriters who can't sing or pay guitar .
I'm sure with 90 billion songs done by Suno , that exactly what they had in mind . The person can't play guitar or sing , So by our genius were going to give them an avenue to be heard . Most of the lectures by people , never go to songs anyway AI or not , I'm not sure what their doing , like to hear them selves talk I guess on AI is the devil . It's a song done by robots , pure genius . Radio Ready songs on pushing a button .

@ElvisNash - using Suno is no different that using a DAW, it just expedites the process. Even tho there are a billion plug in that you can use in a DAW to generate vocals, instruments, even now chord progressions. With Suno, you can stem out the voice from music and pull it and manipulate it. based on comments made by Timbaland, when he had a contest on SUNO, last november, this is his intention.

All good with me Bill , I got better things to do than worry about AI , like being married

@ElvisNash - good luck with that :)

right . I'm more concerned on paying for radio play than comments on song forums . There for entertaining purposes . Share a few songs and laughs . Getting upset over AI is a waste of time . it's here deal with it

Ai generated music is a major disruption to both the industry and the individual. It's not surprising that it causes volatile and polarized reactions - all major disruptions do. It calls into question how meaningful and valuable songwriting is - something that most of us are quite passionate about! A little calmness and tolerance here will go a long way.
I agree with your statement that it's up to the individual to decide whether they wish to use AI in their songs.
And that's the policy of the site. Because it can be a triggering issue, it's also site policy to clearly identify when AI generated music is being used as you post it, and people are doing that. People who don't value AI generated music then have a choice not to listen to it, or to avoid those posts altogether if they wish - that's perfectly acceptable behaviour, the only requirement is to comment on two songs from other people for each one you post yourself. The only exception is fully AI generated songs (both lyrics and music) where the only human input is a prompt. These are not acceptable on TSF. TSF was established as a place for songwriters to help other songwriters. If there is no human involvement, there is no one to help. I don't doubt there are skills in prompting as well, but they aren't what we focus on here. These policies are here to stay.
I think there is a misconception that AI music is somehow generating a flood of posts here on this site, but that's a fallacy. The lyrics are still being written by people, that part is not being automated. We have some prolific and talented lyricists here who are posting new works each day, and that is great. But it's not unusual. In my 15+ years on the forum, there have nearly always been more lyricists than musicians, and the lyricists usually post more often. Lyricists are doing what they have always done, but now with an extra link that you can follow or not.
And lastly, to end my rant, I would like to say that I have yet to meet a lyricist who didn't passionately want to hear their words set to music. If they didn't, they would be on a poetry site. Collaborations between lyricists and musicians are wonderful. I've done some myself. But they are rare. Back of the envelope, I'd guess not 1 in 100 lyrics gets picked up and worked on in partnership with another member. To deny people the right to hear their music and share it here on TSF would simply be unjust.
It would be nice if we could just put aside the whole debate and go back to songwriting! That's the part I enjoy. But realistically, there is a long way yet on the AI journey. Whichever side you find yourself on, be respectful to other members - it's a requirement here - and kind to yourself.

Well said owen.. I think we can all agree of the visual of The Bee Gees doing punk, would be quite funny..

Indeed. I might pay to see that!

"radio play"... Wow I didn't realize this existed: "imagine a future where an AI can sense your mood and play a custom soundtrack just for you"

@StoneFlowers -that’s very cool.0
-
They did that with Randy Travis . I think they used a real singer though and session players , I'm not sure this is the same on that Stoneflowers . Seems there would legal issues on that , I'm not sure . I'm sure legal issues have been Ironed out , if their launching that radio channel .
I'm not sure why AI is such a big issue , Sing them and use session players or use AI , it's just music to listen to.

@RainyDayMan - you can close this post. i've said what needed to be said. no point in keeping it open. as it looks like it's turning into bashing AI, which was not the intent of the original post.

I think it's too strong to classify these comments as AI Bashing. Some discussion and difference of opinion is acceptable provided it's civil. You have the right to post, others have a right to reply, provided it doesn't get out of hand. I'll leave it open for the moment.

@RainyDayMan - Ok.. it's just that I know the sentiment of some members, and prefer not to see them :)... the concept of AI, has also been pretty much been beaten to death.. really time to move on from the discussion

Now that is something we agree on!

They say "keep your eyes on the prize." It would be easy to lose sight of the real "prize" here. The goal is to end up with something worth listening to. Some will disagree. I've had two people here tell me I'm "playing with the devil" because I've not made my mind up about A.I. The prize for ME (each of you can choose for yourself) is about having stuff I can sing that people might actually listen to. There is no politics, and no religion involved and religious and political motivations will not be factored in. FWIW. . . I think it's a mistake to bring political and/or religious stuff onto the forum. If I'm to react to someone's song or lyric in an unbiased way, knowing his/her political and/or religious attachments makes it less likely that I can listen without prejudice.

isn't this playing with devil kinda out dated , its robots. Well you know the old saying , Never talk politics or religion , Well that went out the window on forums lol
