Can't sing in key or mostly at all
First off. The forum is great to listen and share music. I have heard some of the best and worst written songs. There seems to be an abundance of badly sung songs. Out of key, out of range, just plain talking lyrics. I just don't understand why you would share and not even have a melody. Can someone explain what is going on?

It takes years to be professional songwriter
It also takes a few years to figure out PRO _ Tools, with a investment on your part
If your not willing to do that , then in takes another investment for a producer and studio time
That's just the music part
Then your going to pay for promotion hiring someone for that
Its all a tradeoff from what normal people do so you can create music
If your in it for the money , your in the wrong business'

Yes, I agree about the forum being a great place to listen and share music. I can't say that I'm hearing an 'abundance of badly sung songs' though. Vocal style is very much a matter of individual taste. Some of the best known vocalists, artists and bands haven't always been great singers technically. It hasn't stopped them from being successful.
Standards are going to vary for sure. Some of us have been around a long time while others are just learning the ropes. No harm in telling it how we hear it. But 'an abundance of badly sung songs'? Not in my humble opinion.😀

@ChrisPrice and @ElvisNash have hit the nail on the head.
I'd say for most of us it's about reasources and our current musical skill set.
Personal I consider myself to a mediocre guitarist, an awful bassist and an absolutely terrible drummer. I certainly don't consider myself to be a vocalist in any way shape or form. But I love writing songs and I don't get anywhere near as much time as I'd like to put into it.
I sing (hehe) my own lyrics to get a musical idea or theme across. I wish I could afford to hire someone else to sing my tunes. I don't I move in any local musical social circles.
Isn't this site about learning and improving our "SongWriting" abilities?
But anyway, should you find anything of mine... "badly sung songs. Out of key, out of range." I would definitely appreciate any suggestions and advice you may have to offer.

Dylan is the greatest song -writer of the 20 century
He really isn't a great singer . So he focused a lot of energy to a great story
He lied a lot to reporters on Bs stories , another key ingredient on becoming a great songwriter
Well and marriage , but that's another topic

You don't have to be a great vocalist just good. I love James Taylor. He is very good vocalist not great. James has written some of the very best songs. When I listen I can see and understand his story.
Yes Dylan is a great song writer. I can't stand his voice. James Taylor is a great song writer. His voice is sooo much better. I think James is the greats folk writer/singer in the 20 century.

JT ? Oh yeah he's great
Dylan just started singer songwriter back in the 60ties , You have to listen to Dylan close to get him
a lot of people hate his voice lol

'...just good'? but how do you define that? I can't stand Dylan's voice either, and his harmonica playing was summed up rather well by Neil Innes in his 'Protest Song' spoof. I'm a Brit..I grew up with The Stones. Jagger was technically an awful singer but he is still top of his game even at 80!! I applaud anyone who dares to face up to an SM58 and let it out!!

Mick ? yeah he can't sing really lol . I like Dylan's voice , he just hangs on vowels
He got away with it , very high IQ in biz , Mick I mean
But thats going back along time ago , I'm sure looking in 2024 , will find great song writers , but not great singers
Its all attitude

For me, this is a forum for songwriters. Some members can sing too, and that's great! But if you're not that good a singer (and I put myself squarely in that category!) what are you going to do? Just post the lyrics, when you also have the melody and accompaniment sorted? Paying others to sing quickly becomes very expensive - especially if you are looking for feedback on how to improve the song rather than having a completed, polished version. I would rather hear the whole song, warts and all, than try to guess what the songwriter had in mind. So I encourage everyone to record and post, whatever their level of singing or playing talent. Let's hear it! And I'll do my best to give feedback on the song, rather than the performance. For those who perform well, it's a different story. They are usually also interested in feedback on vocals, instrumentation, levels, noise, mixing etc - ie they are looking to create a polished, professional recording. But it's usually clear which is which.

Chirs,
Jagger is a better singer than Dylan. Dylan is/was a great song writer. Jagger may be the greatest front man of all time!!

This is a great place to post and listen to other artist ideas. I would like to hear good melodies over clever lyrics. What I don't understand. How can you play, understand music theory and not have an ear for singing. Sing in key. Your range doesn't have to be great. Dylan can sing in key. His voice is what I would call, not good. He has 0 range. He still sings in key.....

I'm not sure singing in key is a choice. You can or you can't.

I'm not sure that he's a better singer than Dylan, but I agree he's one of the best front men - of a certain genre anyway. Going back to the original point of the thread, I'm still not sure about the 'abundance of badly sung songs' you referred to. 😀

Maybe its me. I love Dylan's songs. Do not like his voice. I like Dylan's songs by other artist.

I do believe after 48 years on this planet. Some people just cant hear the notes. Anyone can sing in key with little range.

Though the original poster has been deleted, FWIW to anyone else, here's what I think.
That you can hear that your singing off key - that you're not "tone deaf," is a very positive thing. If your singing is only moderately pitchy, then pitch correction could do a world of good for your mixes without causing your voice to sound too artificial. Of course, depending on the particular song and the "genre" it may fall in, having the vocal sound too artificial may actually be a good thing for the song. In any event, pitch correction software would likely be something you might find useful if you're writing and recording your own songs. My primary advice though is to practice singing, and you'll get better at it, and don't just use your "natural" singing voice either. Just like we can use use different sorts of voices when we speak, we can also use different kinds of voices when we sing. Use singing voices that give you the most control over your singing of a particular song, regardless of whether it's considered "proper" singing technique. You're not trying to be a lead singer; You're trying to sing well enough to sing vocal tracks for your recordings. I tell myself that, though I am not blessed with a very good natural singing voice, I'm still a good singer because I can "impersonate" a damn good singer for my songs. :) Whatever you do, I hope you never use an AI singer for your songs. If you do, then you have my permission to feel shame for being such a lazy coward. :)
