Penny Dreadful

A song about a tough girl I went to school with.

https://mauricekilday.bandcamp.com/track/penny-dreadful

You were a dog when we were at school

You'd always bend or break the rules

You did things that I never could tell

You'd cut and run before the bell

They said that you were a mixed up kid

Cos of the crazy things you did

Penny Dreadful, poor little Penny Dreadful

You weren't no girl you were one of the boys

You ran with the pack you made a big noise

Traded your toys for some cheap cigarettes

You were the one we could never forget

They said that you were a mixed up kid

Cos of the crazy things you did

Penny Dreadful, poor little Penny Dreadful

Now that we're older, nostalgia calls

Remember the times with our backs to the wall

But you knew no fear and were ready to fight

I remember those days, I remember those nights

They said that you were a mixed up kid

Cos of the crazy things you did

Penny Dreadful, poor little Penny Dreadful

Poor little Penny Dreadful

Poor little Penny blue

  • I think a lot of us have memories of someone like Penny. I like this, it has a very late 60's feel to my mind. Memorable vocal and some great guitar playing. A bit repetitive later in the song if you don't mind me saying, but otherwise a great track. I enjoyed this😀

  • Really vivid description of Penny Dreadful. It's easy to imagine her.

Lovely clean sound in the mix.

Like the backing vocals and the guitar work.

The melody range in the chorus is a bit narrow, you might throw some higher or lower notes in there to mix it a bit.

And the fade out could probably come in a bit earlier.

But I could listen to a lot more songs like this one!

  • Good storyline and very vivid. You really brought the images of Penny out to the fore.

Look forward to hearing more of your work.

    Highly enjoyable.

    Thank you

    Sid

  • @mondobongo Interesting, good song that's reminiscent of the late 60s, but also with some hint of REM from the 90s. The vocals and music are mixed well. Cool track. I enjoyed listening. Nice work! 😀

    Cheers,

    Joseph

  • Really cool guitar lick at the main refrain. Super catchy.

Also enjoy the vivid description of Penny (great title, by the way!) throughout the lyrics. My only suggestion is the same as Rainydayman's above: the main verse melody would benefit from some more dynamics. But overall, a good 'un!

First of all, thanks so much for taking the time to listen to my song, I appreciate that.

I agree with the comments that it could do with some better dynamics and changes in the pitch of the vocal.

I also now realise that the outro is a bit banal and could definitely benefit from a quicker fade out.

To be honest I'm surprised how positive and fair the comments are, I expected a very critical critique. Thanks so much for your input which I will take onboard and thanks for the welcome into the group.

Oh and as for the 60's references that's very close as most of my musical influences come from growing up in the 70's 😁

  • A very nice story, I love the flute, it gives it a special, childish magic in honor of it

Maybe the bass could have a little more volume? I think it would go well with the sound spectrum that is generally high-pitched, very bright.
