Sir/Madam
When I was writing this song I had all of the music and vocal melody but no words, and I shared a phone-recording of me playing it and just humming/vocalising the melody with a friend. Most of my songs start that way...with just sounds filling in the vocal melody. He replied saying he thought he heard me sing "Dear Sir or Madam" (I hadn't, but we're both massive Beatles fans so no wonder his brain heard that). Well, that was all I needed as a prompt and I had the lyric finished by bedtime.

Sir/Madam
Dear sir or madam, why do you spend your days
In all these uninspiring ways?
You seem to go along just to get along
Have I got it wrong?
Dear sir or madam, after the day is done
You count up all the things you've won
Instead of feeling happy and energized
You're anaesthetized
Goes to show, the sun got in your eyes again
Dear sir or madam, what will it take to see
It's all a matter of degree?
A morning trying not to be overrun
And then the day is done
Goes to show, the sun got in your eyes again
And you know it's not guaranteed to rise again
Before we die we better try
Identifying what would really make our hearts sing
Before we know it
We could blow this puppet show
And find we pissed away the whole thing
So let's get started on the upswing
Dear sir or madam, can you believe it's true
That you're like me and I'm like you?
The clearer our intentions to seize the day
The more the disarray
Goes to show, the sun got in our eyes again
And we know it's not guaranteed to rise again
Before we die we better try
Identifying what would really make our hearts sing
Before we know it
We could blow this puppet show
And find we pissed away the whole thing
So let's get started on the upswing

This is a nice wake up call song, I enjoyed the lyrics particularly "That you're like me and I'm like you?". I love the melody of the line "Dear Sir or Madam", in fact all the songs melody is nice. As for the Beatles reference, I feel the harmony vocals are nicely Beatlesque which is a good thing!
There's lots to like here, good arrangement, keys and a nice punchy bassline.
Nice one.

Love the retro sound! Really enjoyed this.
I can empathize with your songwriting technique. Certainly had the experience of vocalizing anything over a melody until a word or phrase clicks into place and the whole thing crystallizes around that.

Great song Matt, enjoyed that a lot.
Very good music and vocals.
One comment, the rhyme scheme is a bit weak against your usual standard of work.
That aside, good job.
Well done.

Good song, Matt. Great lyrics and vocals, and very authentic 60s feel. Are those drums real? They sound like it, and they sound good!0

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.
@sidshovel - I hear you. It's a pretty pedestrian rhyming scheme in the verses. But I did try to kick it up a notch in the bridge!
@TomC - I programmed the drums using Jamstix, a DAW plugin I can't recommend highly enough.
