Now Comes Good Sailing

As Henry David Thoreau lay dying of Tuberculosis, drifting in and out of consciousness in his final hours, the last sentence he was heard to speak was "Now comes good sailing." The positivity and hope of those words has always been inspirational to me, so I nicked them and built a song around them!

Now Comes Good Sailing

When I was young I was among the very thinnest-skinned

Afraid of all, but casting stones like one who'd never sinned

But that ignorance is losing grip, and experience is prevailing

Now comes good sailing

All the things in front of me I thought were in the way

Would make me change my course until I found myself astray

It seemed the efforts of my life were somehow unavailing

Now comes good sailing

I'll stay ashore on a rainy day

And although a game is on

Some days I don't want to play

But with some rest and a cup of tea

I'll be back to me again

So climb aboard this boat and help me push it from the shore

We'll watch the breezes building in the highest sycamore

Hold the rope and lean your body hard against the railing

Now comes good sailing

  • Very good Matt,

    Enoyed that, jaunty and uplifting.

Good storyline too, well sung and music excellent.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I like the song itself: the lyric and melody. I'm less keen on the mix on this one. It feels a bit crowded to me, competing with the vocal and distracting from it.

But it works well on your refrain. The guitar lick there is strong.

I've not heard the quote from Thoreau before. It certainly makes a good hook for a song!

  • Thanks for listening. Yes, I'm definitely guilty of crowding up my mixes - have a hard time knowing when to say when!

  • Oh! It's a good song, great lyrics and vocals but maybe mix could be better?

  • Hi Matt - your vocals are very good on this. There are also some unexpected chord changes that help keep interest. I agree with @RainyDayMan that the mix might be crowded in the verses. The idea would be quieter in the verses and all out in the chorus. Your choice, of course! Good song and a great quote for a song starter.
