A pretty literal tale about leaving the cornfields of Illinois, visiting a dear friend in Colorado and wandering through the mountainous back-country whilst eating the kinds of mushrooms your mother never used to put in the spaghetti sauce.

Day Trip

When I was young and I needed change

I'd take a trip to a mountain range

And once, I never came back again

I'll see a friend there

I won't pretend there

I'll clear my head and shake the dread of everyday despair

So, fill the car up with gasoline

There's a long stretch of road and some long states in-between

Relieved it's only make-believe

It takes its toll on you

All told, the things you behold

While he was climbing a ragged tree

The earth had sloped and surrounded me

The wind moved the two places into one

We get up and go

We find a plateau

And I unfurled into a world of everything aglow

How the mind feels breaking through

When you least expect it to

Relieved it's only make-believe

We're bombing down rocky mountainsides

Each jump a flight that our speed provides

Below, shifting swarms of pebbled lanes

We find a stream and with heads still dreaming

I find a stone lying alone under the water gleaming

Now it's a lifetime talisman

I never had a master plan
