Lovestruck Runaways

When I first got together with the woman I would eventually marry we were both young, newly arrived in the UK and had all the sights and sounds of London directly out our doors. Yet for months we didn't see much of it, because we were so distracted with eachother at home. Every time we'd finally make it out to see one of the sites we would find it had already closed for the day. Became a bit of an inside joke how to explain to family on the phone why we'd not yet seen this or that landmark.

Anyway, this is a song I wrote sixteen years later that tries to capture those exhilarating days.

If I say to you

How are you feeling, and whatcha wanna do

Then you look back at me

Your eyes a little twinkly

So we're late again

It happens just a little more than now and then

But I sure can't complain

So leave us in the sugar cane

I got a real good feeling that it's gonna work out today

Gotta be so careful so the feeling don't go away

We know that's just how the story goes

In our earliest days

Every time the feeling is so sublime

Two love-struck runaways

Stepping out tonight

No place to go but we're feeling alright

So let's just chase the glow

And try to never let it go

I got a real good feeling that it's gonna work out today

Gotta be so careful so the feeling don't go away

We know that's just how the story goes

In our earliest days

Every time the feeling is so sublime

Two love-struck runaways

  • Ahh what a great sweet spin on sugar cane, I mean young love. Great composition great story. Seductive music. And no doubt takes many of us back to young love when we'd just as soon spend the day in bed....great tune!

  • Got a lovely sweet feeling to it. Innocent and not, at the same time.

If it were mine I'd probably put it in a major key, but that's a personal choice.

"Your eyes a little twinkly" that's nice!

I like how some words stretch out and others rush through, really nice dynamics!

    Very enjoyable! 😀

  • A good piece and enjoyable, you captured the joy of young love well.

Lyrics, sweet yes, but maybe a tad too sweet on the rhyming scheme.

    I did like it though,

    Sid

  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

@RainyDayMan - Glad you picked up on the "innocent and not" vibe! On the major key point, I'm so rubbish at music theory that I wouldn't even know how to put it in a major key!

@sidshovel - sickly-sweet is always a danger I come up against. Sometimes I don't know when to ease off the sweetcelerator 😆.

  • hahaha So funny and real! This song should be played on every radio, many would understand it and smile!!! I love the changes and the effects in the voices, I think it's one of your best songs, good guitars, good voices and choruses and instrumentation, I'll send you a cake for you and your wife @mattyoung

  • This is wonderful. A great song - some fabulous singing and playing. The production is awesome.. Absolutely no crits from me. I hear hints of The Beatles, 10cc, Squeeze and, well - lots of people - but this stands up in it's own right too.

    Great stuff.😀

  • Thanks very much, @ChrisPrice. I've gotten Squeeze comparisions for a few of my songs, which is wild considering the only Squeeze song I think I know is Up the Junction (which is a great tune!).

  • @mattyoung This is a very good song with a clear influence from the Beatles and Paul McCartney. Your lyrics are well-penned and your vocals are good. The title and theme were novel and interesting. My favorite parts of the track were the solid bass and lead guitar in the track. The song is well produced and the mix is clear. I enjoyed listening. Nice work!

    Cheers,

    Joseph
