Calling All the World

Inspired by @StoneFlowers Wild Ride posting, I had to decide between posting a hopefully overcome by the state of the world or a bitterly overcome by the state of the world song. I've gone with the more upbeat and hopeful one.

Calling all the world:

Can we pull our heads from the sand?

'Cause I've never felt so scared about tomorrow

This old powder keg

Is getting too far out of hand

And there's not another one that we can borrow

Can we resign ourselves to not getting everything we crave

And finally define ourselves

By the joy we weave

And the love we leave

When we are in our graves?

Another bad-news year

I want to disappear

No silver lining on the evening news

They're not serving food for thought

They just want to stir that pot

As they read out the drama on their Autocues

  • Great tune, powerful message, pro sound.  Food for thought... head up, face in the sun, eyes on the horizon, believe everything will be ok.

  • I loved the message and the song, the lyrics were excellent too.

    lovely presentation well sung.

But, to my ears there is a mismatch between the message and the tone of the music.

The music was a little too upbeat for the "last throw of the dice" plea I felt.

    That aside, a lovely song.

    Thank you for sharing

    Sid

  • Very relevant in our modern world!

I'd be tempted to ease off the synths in the verses, I feel they're taking up too much of the audio space. I think it's a better mix when you get to : Can we resign ourselves. There's a really nice bass line in there and it's a shame to cover it up too much.

Nicely structured, good melody, strong lyric and nice clean recording.

  • Wow, inspired by another artist on this site! I think the love that the world used to have is coming back!

I think it's like your other song; it's good but needs upgrading to the professional standard. This one sounds like the band Squeeze but isn't even a rough demo quality. Don't let that discourage you at all. Maybe hook up with or pay a professional producer . These days you can find professionals who will do a song for a few hundred dollars to maybe a thousand at most. There was a guy in Los Angles who did professional work but it's hard to make the "millions" in the business so apparently he' charged like $500 for a song. I forget who he is but there's plenty of people out there that can do it and do it remotely from anywhere where there's an internet connection.

  • Thanks for the comments, everyone.

@sidshovel - The upbeat music is the hopefulness that the lyrics don't come right out and say, I guess.

@RainyDayMan - by synths do you mean the electric organ? Funny enough, and early mix only had it come in at the very end, but a friend whose opinion I put a lot of value in said it should be throughout the whole song. I like it, though maybe I just mixed it a bit too loud.

@robwills - On this same song I've got the comment "pro sound" and "isn't even rough demo quality", which goes to show that we all have different standards when it comes to production. For me this is absolutely demo quality, and I really have no desire to pay someone to do what I so enjoy doing for free. I'm not after making millions through music. I just really like writing and recording songs.

  • Yes, it would be the organ I was thinking of. As you noted, you're going to get different opinions on all these matters, so using your own discretion is always advised!

  • The subjective standards of sound and music quality are quite narrow. This is why if you listen to any major radio stations all the music, without exception, meets a very high standard of quality parameters. Some people can create professional sound quality at home but most can not. Regardless, as long as you're having fun and/or enjoyment doing it that's all that matters.

  • "The subjective standards of sound and music quality are quite narrow. This is why if you listen to any major radio stations all the music, without exception, meets a very high standard of quality parameters."

Sure, but I'm not sure why you'd assume I'm trying to make radio hits. I'm trying to write songs and capture them in demo form as a 'proof of concept'. Maybe feedback like "not even rough demo quality" makes sense for a music production forum, but it comes across to me as a bit offensive on a songwriter forum.

  • You have achieved a very real portrait of how many of us feel when faced with world news, that world led by hostile and stupid hands that make us complicit in their actions. I was amused by the style you have used to dress the song, it is unexpected, soft, romantic even, like a dance of university students from years ago dancing oblivious to what exists outside...

It has been a very pleasant listen @mattyoung
