Catholic Whiskey

This was a very interesting song writing endeavor.  I was raised Catholic but this ironic dichotomy, (Catholic Whiskey), has never crossed my mind before.

Thank all of you who had suggestions on this song.  I was able to incorporate many of them…

Catholic Whiskey—whiskey made in predominately Catholic, Southern Ireland, in particular the Jameson’s brand.

My daddy was a drunk

His dad and his brothers too

If hell fire could be guzzled down

That’s where they’ll all be found

Off to confession my mother cried

And tell the priest your sins

Or the devil soon will live within

As a child I wondered why

But she knew the day was coming

Drink would spill in a spinning room

The family curse was waiting

To take me for a fool

I’ll be good I promised her

I’ll pray what needs be said

But I stumbled short of heaven’s key

And drowned in the curse in Catholic whiskey

In the mirror a distorted a face

In the light it’s clear to trace

A look the drunk can’t see

Blind by the curse of Catholic whiskey

Break

Ah the cold holy water be blessed

But the whiskey makes me warmer

I’ll bless the burn as it goes down

To where my soul be found

Off to confession now I’ll wobble

Tell my sins to the face on the bottle

Clutch the glass like rosary beads

Let the drink set me free

She knew the day was coming

Drink would spill and the room would spin

Now I pray for a better day

With a shot of Jameson’s

I’ll be good I promised her

I’ll pray what needs be said

But the saving light I couldn’t see

Blind by the curse in Catholic whiskey
