Verse 1:

I'm heading into the unnamed hills

with a bag of ashes and a cloak of sadness

I'll lay them both behind me when I leave

A quiet spot and an unmarked grave

I know you'd like it better that way

You always said don't stand at my grave and weep

Pre-chorus:

We said goodbye a long time ago

Why is it still so hard for me to let go?

Chorus:

You're alive in me and I in you

You're my guiding light

Though you're out of sight

Stay alive in me and see me through

Don't let the memories fade from view

Verse 2:

Memories carved in my heart

I'll take them with me when I part

Just one more minute before I go

Laughter and the tears we've known

Sacred moments etched in stone

How I live without you, I don't know

Pre-chorus

Chorus

Don't let the memories fade

  • A beautiful song with wonderful sentiments, Owen. Perhaps your best ever! The track is well crafted. I enjoyed your guitar work as usual! The lyrics were somber and fit well with the song's atmosphere. The production and sound are very clear.

My favorite part is at the beginning of the chorus with "You're alive in me and I in you" and the accompanying chord change at the end of the line. Your raspy vocal delivery adds authenticity to the song. I could easily imagine this song featured with a touching 'goodbye' scene in a movie. I enjoyed listening! Nice work! 😀

    Cheers,

    Joseph

  • Hey Owen,
Now this is a real good one! I like the images you used and the tone.
I also like the way you put the words together. There is not a word to much, no bla bla the listener might get lost in, it’s sharp but still emotional (lack of a better word).
    Keep going!
    Best wishes
    Ian
  • This is really moving Owen. A lovely song. Obviously, I don't know the story behind it but I can use my imagination. Without getting into personal stuff here on the forum, let's just say I can very much relate to this. This is performed in your own unique style and, as you know, I'm a fan of your music. Well done mate. 😀

  • @icystorm Thanks Joseph. Yes a film scene would indeed work well. Here's hoping! These days the raspy voice comes along for the ride, appropriate or not! Glad it helped in this instance ;)

@RainbowKeeper That's a fine complement Ian - thank you sir! It's a good feeling that I can still write something tight.

@ChrisPrice Thank's Chris! And I always appreciate your input. This isn't a specific event in my life, but it's informed and colored by real events.

@sidshovel I guess those events are intense and emotional, and draw from deep inside. I'm glad that it moved you. Loss is something we all share in common.

It was definitely meant as a compliment. It's part of your signature sound and you do it well. I always enjoy hearing your songs. 😀

  • @RainyDayMan . . . For sure this is a powerful song lyric, and a well crafted song . . . kickstarted with "bag of ashes and a cloak of sadness", every subsequent line is poignant as the one before, and songwriters will know that's no easy thing to create. Also, really liked how the chorus unfolds the upside of a life gone by, through the eyes of someone left behind, instead of dwelling on the sadness. Really enjoyed this one, refreshing heartsong . . . thank you Owen !

  • @icystorm Yes, I knew it was meant as a compliment. Just joking and poking fun at myself!

@popitup Thanks for the thoughtful comments! Appreciated.

  • Hey man , cool song on old friends and letting go
