We were younger then

We were younger then

Verse

That summer’s only a whisper

In my memory.

But I hear her on sunny days.

On strolls by the sea.

Catch the scent of coconut oil.

Still see her bronze skin.

I remember, I remember.

We were younger then.

Pre chorus

Life hadn’t beat us down yet.

We were both full of hope.

I still have her love letters.

She still has the ones I wrote.

Chorus

I remember, I remember.

We were younger then.

I remember, I remember

We were younger than.

Verse

I was sixteen she was fifteen.

We were full of dreams.

I was head over heels in love.

She was into me.

By a bonfire on a blanket.

It was our first time.

Even though it’s been many years.

She’s still on my mind.

Pre chorus

Life hadn’t beat us down yet.

We were both full of hope.

I still have her love letters.

She still has the ones I wrote.

Chorus

I remember, I remember.

We were younger then.

I remember, I remember

We were younger than.

Verse

She got divorced a few years back

And I lived alone.

She called me and we met for lunch.

We had tea and scones.

There was still a little magic

Though time don’t stand still.

She said I still think about you.

Guess I always will.

Chorus

I remember, I remember.

We were younger then.

I remember, I remember

We were younger than.

Verse

Since then, we’ve made new memories.

Relit the old flame.

These days we aren’t quite so reckless

But love’s still the same.

We read each other’s love letters.

She had saved her too.

She said you were so foolish then.

I said so were you.

Tag

And she said;

I remember, I remember.

We were younger then.

We were younger then.

Very cool story and provokes great sentiment. Bittersweet. Do you go to open mikes? I think you might have luck finding a songwriting partner that way...With such great lyrics it seems like these could really turn into something cool.

  • Didn’t know I could post lyrics there.
  • Absolutely loved the song Carroll, It takes you on a journey over time and love beautifully.

It has elements of Martha by Tom Waits one of the best love songs ever written, so it's in good company.

    Sid

  • Well crafted song. These are my favorite lines:

There was still a little magic

    Though time don’t stand still.

Personally, I'm uncomfortable with the young ages. I think you're on shaky ground there, and I don't think you need to explicitly state the ages to make the lyric work.

  • She was 18 I was 20
  • I was referring to this line: "I was sixteen she was fifteen."

You could change that to "I was twenty she was eighteen", or just replace it with something else, or leave it as is.

Your choice of course. Just giving you feedback that as a listener/reader it made me uncomfortable.

  • Can’t figure out edit.
