Mother's Warning

I spent my life looking

at an empty mirror

I didn't know what

I was supposed to be looking for

I started looking for answers

in all the wrong places

Spent many a night, drunk and wasted

Chorus

I was told that the grass

was greener on the other side

but it was all lies, it was all lies

I thought I knew it all

I thought my hallucinations, were holy visions

It was only after another night, spent in the gutter

that my tide began to turn

Chorus

I was told that the grass

was greener on the other side

but it was all lies, it was all lies

It was my tears, that helped me see clearly

and my mother's words of warning

that came back, to haunt me

shamefully for me, it was too late

I love you, but I don't like you

I love you, but I don't like you

Chorus

I was told that the grass

was greener on the other side

but it was all lies, it was all lies

I'd laughed in her face

as she'd tried to warn me

told me I was on the road to ruin

but I'd just carried on

now her words pronged me, like the devil's fork

Chorus

I was told that the grass

was greener on the other side

but it was all lies, it was all lies

Chorus

I was told that the grass

was greener on the other side

but it was all lies, it was all lies

  • My favorite line here is "I love you, but I don't like you". that hits hard.

Might be just me, but the "grass is greener" line doesn't work as well for me because I'm not sure where you were, and what the greener grass was/looked like. I guess it's implied that its booze and bad living, but maybe something could be added at line 3, and the chorus is short enough currently to allow it be expanded.

I like the "empty mirror" line

Ok Owen, looking back I think, that I had the same thought in the back of my mind about the greener grass line
