Angels On The Radio (2023)

I wrote this song after I got news of my mother's lymphoma diagnosis. This was roughly one year after we lost our son to brain cancer. My own recent health struggles and stay in the hospital have reignited my interest in themes of the song. I've never been happy with the mix or vocal performance on the first version of the song, so here's another crack. Maybe in a couple of years I'll take another run at it.

Sometimes I feel like driving (G  Bm   Em)

Hit the road to I don’t know (G Bm Am/G)

Have someone send my belongings (G Bm Em)

To where the living suits my soul  (Am C  G)

No guarantees of a tomorrow (G  Bm   Em)

No easy love no peace of mind (G Bm Am/G)

I’ve had all the luck that I could borrow (G Bm Am/G)

Won’t you come and see me on the other side (Am C  G)

Movies of the past playing in my mind (Bm  G)

Playing outdoors, I can hear Momma’s call  (Bm  G)

Supper sits waiting at the table (Em)

Man, I guess we really had it all (C  F  D)

SOLO

This steering wheel don’t need no hands (G  Bm   Em)

These rolling wheels know where to go  (G  Bm Am/G)

Throw away your maps cancel all your plans (G  Bm  Em)

Listen to the angels singing on the radio (Am  C  G)

The only thing harder than making a dollar is making a friend (Bm   G)

The only thing as hard as making a friend Is saying goodbye (Bm   G)

I lay up at night and wonder why we bother (Am)

And I try to pretend (Em)

That maybe everything will be alright  (C F D)

SOLO

Sometimes I feel like driving (G  Bm   Em)

Hit the road to I don’t know (G Bm Am/G)

Have someone send my belongings (G Bm Em)

To where the living suits my soul  (Am C  G)

One day you’ll glance in that rear view mirror (G  Bm   Em)

See the road stretched so far behind

You can’t help but laugh smile through the tears (G  Bm   Em)

Because you know you, they’ll see you on the other side (Am  C  G)

Movies of the past playing in my mind (Bm  G)

  • its a sweet song , usually with a hook like angels singing on the radio. You'd want to point to it in every line , so it pays off.

Sorry to hear on your bad luck on medical problems... and your son.

  • I feel I have to tread carefully with songs songs that are very personal..and this clearly is. The chord progressions and guitar playing kinda remind me of Eric Clapton/George Harrison. It's a great song. if I'm gonna be critical I'd say that the drums sound a bit too digital and pedestrian. This would sound fabulous played by a live band. it needs a big guitar solo imo. Excellent😀

  • Its a strong track.

I think you've got the mood right, contemplative and slightly sad.

And I like the guitar breaks throughout.

I'd like to hear you go bolder on the vocals - really sing it out. Feels like it could be more dramatic if you wanted it that way.

Yeah, stronger is what I'd like to be able to do, but I lack the technique to hold the notes with any real power and not push them out of pitch over these chords. However, I'm getting better at this sort of thing and will take another stab at it in the future.

Blues, punk, folk, rock- I am very comfortable with my voice in those settings, but the slowness of this track really makes me work and exposes my shortcomings for sure.

Big thanks for listening, and commenting!

Yeah, after the lyrics came to me I actually had to see if there were any other titles or songs that matched it too closely. I was thinking that maybe an old emo song from the 90's might have been banging around in my subconscious or something.

  • Nope your safe never been done , Lucky I'm not a thief I'd steal it lol

Some of these lines are so striking,

    Wow
  • This is a beautiful and reflective song that seems to fully express your state of mind. I am sorry about your challenges and those of your loved ones and hope you are doing OK. I will second the emotion that everything will be all right. We all be reunited when this is over. I am very inspired by your song. Thank you for sharing.
