Seen New York City

I was raised on a gravel road and a screen door slam
Where a man shakes hands and means what he says he can
Cornfields stretch like time don’t move
And a Friday night’s just a pair of boots and a tune
Then I caught me a bus where the skyline burns
Neon lies and money to burn
Thought I’d find me something bigger than me
But it damn near took what I used to be
Pre
Yeah the lights shine bright but they don’t shine clean
There’s a price on every damn thing you see
Ch
They can’t keep you on the farm once you’ve seen New York City
But it don’t mean that it’s good for your soul
Yeah it’ll dress you up, then strip you down to nothin’
Leave you colder than a street made of gold
I seen dreams get sold for a quick hit of pity
Hearts get lost in the noise and the sin
They can’t keep you on the farm once you’ve seen New York City
But I’m fightin’ like hell not to let it win
V2
Met a girl who danced like a wildfire burns
Said “country boys always got somethin’ to learn”
Yeah she taught me fast how to numb the pain
With a glass, a lie, and a different name
I been high-rise drunk on a lowdown truth
Ain’t no roots in steel and a three-piece suit
And the man in the mirror don’t look the same
Just a ghost in boots with a borrowed name
Pre
Yeah it takes what it wants and it don’t give back
Leaves you chasing a life you already had
Bridge
Now I hear them crickets callin’ my name
Through the traffic and the subway trains
And I’d trade this skyline in a heartbeat flat
For a porch light burnin’ and a welcome back
Final Ch
They can’t keep you on the farm once you’ve seen New York City
But maybe you can find your way home
Yeah the world gets loud but the truth stays simple
In the dirt where your roots were grown
Yeah I seen who I was gettin’ buried in pity
But I dug him out with these hands again
They can’t keep you on the farm once you’ve seen New York City
But they damn sure can’t keep me here in the end

I hear this as a strong farm vs New York identity story, and it actually made me think the opposite too—like someone from the city side looking back toward something more grounded and simple. That tension works well, and the chorus really locks it in. A few lines lean on more familiar phrasing, but overall the imagery and emotional arc come through clearly and it feels cohesive and honest. The music fits the lyric well.

Everybody is chasing a dream. it works out for some, but not for others. it's a numbers game, in the end, but you can't fail if you don't try :)
