This Ol' Guitar

Okay! Now that Toney Wright @Cove has completed the backing track for this song, which I shared as a 'lyric only' a few days ago, here's the song. Wishing I was a better singer but I really like this song's sweet sentiment. Thank you for listening.

Thank you so much, Toney!! 💌

THIS OL’ GUITAR

[Verse 1]

Well, I got this ol’ guitar I’m still learnin’ how to play

I must be a slow learner ‘cuz my hair is goin’ gray

But the more I pluck her strings the sweeter she sounds

I’m findin’ it hard these days to put this pride an’ joy down

[Chorus]

This ol’ guitar ‘a mine I wouldn’t trade for a big bar ‘a gold

Her tunin’ keys are tarnished but she’s a humdinger to hold

And with a new set ‘a strings and some tender love an’ care

There’s no better bosom-buddy can be found anywhere

[Verse 2]

And this ol’ guitar ‘a mine dreams of Nashville, Tennessee

Open Mic at The Bluebird Café we’ll get there eventually

‘Cuz with three-chords-and-the-truth there’s no way you can lose

And the truth is she’s the heart an’ soul of my love-gone-wrong blues

[Instrumental]

[Verse 3/Tag]

So, dust off that ol’ guitar let ‘er show you how she sings

Strum a chord or two and let ‘er tug at your heartstrings

You gotta show her how much you love her and she’ll show you lots ‘a things

Might even write a song together for all the world to sing

Yes, you might even write a song together for all the world to sing, woo-hoo-hoo!

  • @HummerWisdom - This is my honest opinion. you play just as well as toney. I know you have limitations, but I don't hear a difference between your playing and toney's. I'm not saying it's bad, It's good. it will appeal., so my two cents. :)

  • @bhengen sorry, Bill, while I appreciate your input, I can’t agree. I could never have done what Toney did with this song musically. Even tried a backing track on YouTube prior; no cigar.

I’m delighted with the song now other than needing a singer; a REAL singer!

  • @HummerWisdom - you are a real singer. your voice is unique, just like janice joplin. it's your voice that gives the songs character.

  • Just like John Denver did in 1974

    Sounds good

  • @ElvisNash Yes! I realized it AFTER I'd written mine or at least half-written. And no, mine's no, John Denver and his was called This Old Guitar if memory serves. Actually, it was pretty cool to find out one of the greats had used my hook prior! 😍

The song is good, and all the better for you giving it a go. Don't get hung up on standards too much, if your happy with it then that's all that matters. You have a voice like Bonnie Tyler, treasure it.

@sidshovel awh, thanks. I just wish I sounded more like a girl, like I look. I got this big ol' husky voice for a slender gal. It just doesn't match. And I'm a Libra; balance and aesthetics are everything, Lol! 😍

And now you made me look up Bonnie Tyler's, It's a Heartache....dang....what a voice! Need to learn to use mine more like her! 😉

Polish who you are, not grind yourself into something you're not!

  • I like your voice on this. It feels like a good match. And it's lovely to hear it set to music.

    Good job, both of you!

  • @sidshovel

    @RainyDayMan

Thanks so much to the both of you. Great advice, Sid. Never heard it put that way before!

I'm so happy to hear the music because I love, love the lyrics. Wow, you make me want to go and pick up a guitar! No pun intended.

I really love the song and the guitar playing is awesome! Someone mentioned Bonnie Tyler (Total Eclipse of the Heart) and yes, your voice reminds me of hers too. I believe you have the voice to go a little rougher on the chorus. :-)

Overall great, great! I enjoyed it.

  • @TammyB I agree. The first take was too rough so I toned it down; maybe too much. Appreciate your kind words and words of wisdom,
