What Is Life Without A Song To Sing? (original lyrics, music via Suno)

Hi,

I am currently in the process of rewriting my own melody for this song, which was the first song I ever completed writing lyrics first, before melody. For fun, I plugged the lyrics into Suno, and I've got to say it kind of knocked it out of the park with both of these versions of the song:

VERSION A: https://suno.com/song/b5e8bb8d-eafc-43db-917e-904f06a1eb1b

VERSION B: https://suno.com/song/944277eb-96aa-4fed-997e-d7c49f55dd8d

I'll still be writing my own music, but I've gotta say I'm impressed by the results from just my lyrics and the basic prompt "gospel, rock, piano, funk". Version A is probably a little closer to how I envisioned the song, but I've gotta say I think Suno went a little harder with Version B.

“What Is Life Without A Song To Sing?”

VERSE 1:

I used to wander, because my eyes were blind.

I didn’t even know what I was tryin’ to find.

I just felt it in my bones, young but oh so sore.

I’d flown through life with one foot out the door!

Oh, I’d flown through life with one foot out the door!

CHORUS 1:

‘Cause what is life without a song to sing?

Of all the joy and wonder this world can bring?

It took a little time to find my life’s duet,

but if there’s a sweeter tune, I ain’t heard it yet.

Just listen close to that beat inside,

shut your eyes and let that rhythm thrive.

POST-CHORUS:

Oh lots of people got their reasons… to sing the songs they’ve sung.

But to me you’ve always been my number one!

To me you’ll always be my number one!

VERSE 2:

Oh I was down on my knees those days.

I hadn’t let the music guide my way.

But when I heard your voice… ringing loud and true…

I knew right then that my duet was you!

Oh I knew right then that my duet was you!

CHORUS 2:

‘Cause what is life without a song to sing?

Of all the joy and wonder this world can bring?

It took a little time to find my life’s duet,

but if there’s a sweeter tune, I ain’t heard it yet.

Just listen close to that beat inside,

shut your eyes and let that rhythm drive.

POST-CHORUS:

Oh lots of people got their reasons… to sing the songs they’ve sung.

But to me you’ve always been my number one!

To me you’ll always be my number one!

CHORUS 3:

‘Cause what is life without a song to sing?

Of all the joy and wonder this world can bring?

It took a little time to find my life’s duet,

but if there’s a sweeter tune, I ain’t heard it yet.

Just keep on dancing to that beat inside,

and just enjoy that music they call life!

OUTRO:

And now our love feels like a gospel song!

It lifts us up and spirits us along!

We sing it loud! We sing it loud and true!

And every day my heart sings out to you!

Oh, every day my heart sings out for you!

@schmalex I too, preferred A, both are good no doubt, A just edged it but not by much.

Gospel, Soul, R & B and Motown are all good genres to write for. You did well for a first effort Alex, not bad at all!

These kind of songs lend themselves to a good thumping chorus and this is no exception, couldn't help movin' to the beat an' rhythm and enjoyed it a lot.

Hope this inspires you to jump on in there and hammer out a load of others.

    Look forward to hearing more.

    Thanks,

    Sid

To be honest, even though Version A is definitely more like what I would end up writing on my own, I think Version B has something more unique going in the rhythm that almost gives it a Van Morrison like vibe that I almost prefer, even though it's not my usual style.

Can't argue with that, totally agree Alex. Both very good renditions.

  • I'm in the Version A camp, but that's of course up to you.

Listening to this, I got to the post chorus: "But to me you’ve always been my number one!" and went, wait, this is a relationship song?

I think you need to set that up before you get to the chorus. So I would suggest taking the first two lines from V1 and combining them with the last 3 from v2 and establish that right up front as V1.

@RainyDayMan it is a relationship song, but I'm trying not to make it specifically a romantic love song. It could be about your relationship with music, or painting, or whatever makes anybody sing, which yes, usually are love songs in popular music, so I like that part being more subtext.

  • No worries! These are only ever suggestions along the lines of "have you thought about.." and clearly you have!

  • I like A best , Nice suno upbeat tune

  • I like the lyrics, and I stand alone, I like version B better because it's more upbeat and it fits the song title.

    Version B makes me happy!

I'm an R&B gal and it has a little bit of R&B in it to me.

Yeah, they're just very different vibes. Version A has more of a modern pop/soul sound like I'd expect from someone like Michael Buble or Andy Grammer, but Version B has more of an old school R&B / funk sound that has more of an upbeat dance vibe that I really like.
