The certainty of poverty
The certainty of poverty
[verse]
There are sneakers on the powerline.
The hood has seen better days.
The steel mine closed down ten years ago.
Half the town has moved away.
[verse]
Desperation is a way of life.
Only the poor understand.
There’s no place here for pity or shame.
No place here for a weak man.
[pre chorus]
Loving you has given me the courage
To take you and flee poverty.
Uncertainty is a lesser danger
than what the streets have planned for me.
[chorus]
The certainty of poverty.
The certainty of poverty.
[Verse]
Freedom is a seldom traveled road;
For lovers in poverty.
You’re sixteen soon to be a mother.
We’ve vowed an oath to break free.
[verse]
I hotwire a car, siphon some gas
flee west from the rising sun.
Abandon the car when it runs dry.
Like two prisoners on the run.
[pre chorus]
Loving you has give me the courage
to take you and flee poverty.
Uncertainty is a lesser danger
than what the streets have planned for me.
[chorus]
The certainty of poverty.
The certainty of poverty.
[Bridge]
We may never have much money.
but we have all that we need.
A safe place to raise a baby.
A future for you and me.
[verse]
Far away from the urban jungle.
The broken streetlights and crime.
I can hear a gentle breeze ringing
from the front porche’s glass chimes.
[verse]
You’re out picking apples from the tree.
Tonight you’re baking a pie.
We’re free from the grip of poverty.
the city’s slow suicide.
[outro]
Loving you has given me the courage
to take you and flee poverty.

Not sure the combo of social commentary and love story is working here. Certainly when I got to the first pre-chorus the line: "Loving you has given me the courage" felt like it came out of nowhere, quite jarring. Might be better to tell the love story with the poverty purely as background. But others may have different views.

I liked this story and these verses, in its semplicity ; if it’s a real story I think it’s good to share it in a song!0

it works , just a bit long for radio time , Unlike Fast Cars by Tracy Chapman
Not that you are going to be on radio , So don't matter

I've seen these kind of towns in South Wales and Belfast, what social deprivation does to your choices.
You captured it well, reality in these circumstances is jarring!
Good story, well told.
