Sensitive Topic! Beware, 'cuz ain't they all sensitive topics as a heart is sensitive and wicked above all things. I like the way you are singing: I’m just lookin’, <pause> lookin’ to be free. Gives it emphasis.
And using the pattern of X woke the Y in me in verses 1 and 2 at the same line gives it structure.
Have you tried playing this with a slightly faster tempo? I feel like there's more energy in the lyric than comes thru on the recording and maybe that might help.

I loved the music Renee! I only hope that the soldier in you is a soldier of peace. A wonderful reading on these themes could be Tiziano Terzani’s Letters Against the War. A wonderful book.
