[verse 1]

On a cliff lookin' out to the ocean,

sit the ruins of St Clements.

The church has been there for ages,

its bells melted for armaments.

[verse 2]

A cold April evening, the year 1912,

Atlantic waves crashed on the rocks.

On a cliff, high above the waterline,

The goatherd tended to his flock

[hook]

The locals tell of a legend,

when a ship's taken by the waves.

The bells of St Clements ring,

As sailors sink to their graves.

[verse 3]

Thousands of miles to the West,

across the cold and black waters,

A majestic ship cuts through the sea,

unaware of the upcomin' slaughter.

[hook]

The locals tell of a legend,

when a ship's taken by the waves.

The bells of St Clements ring,

As sailors sink to their graves.

[verse 4]

In the blackness of the night it stood,

waiting, the deadly crystal monolith.

The ship cut through its final waves,

Too fast, there was no escaping it.

[hook]

The locals tell of a legend,

when a ship's taken by the waves.

The bells of St Clements ring,

As sailors sink to their graves.

[bridge]

Hundreds of souls went into the water,

only a handful that got into a boat.

On the cliff, by the ruins of St Clements,

The old man watched over his goats.

[final hook]

The locals tell of a legend,

when a ship's taken by the waves.

The bells of St Clements ring,

As sailors sink to their graves.

[outro]

He heard it first, a little after midnight,

It sounded different to a goatbell clang.

He'd heard it many times on Sunday's

Church bells, those of St Clements rang.

  • Very interesting lyrics! Where does this legend come from?

It's a general folk tale of non-existent bells ringing to foretell disaster, common in many cultures.

The time, geography, and lyrics are clues here.

There's stories within stories in all of Shovel's stories!

  • master story telling in words. well crafted. the music fits almost perfectly, I think maybe a slower tempo, but then the song the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald has the same tempo..

A song a day keeps the shrink away , Nice song for a Sunday Sid . I was a commercial fisherman for a season , the ocean is a strange place

  • @sidshovel Love this! My Dad's middle name was Clement; John Clement which has beautiful meaning when put together; (gracious and merciful). So this song means more to me than the story in and of itself which you've told beautifully!

    Worthy of Praise song,

  • The bells of St Clements immediately put me in mind of the song (nursery rhyme?) that starts oranges & lemons say the bells of St Clements, but those are in London I think so likely not relevant here.

A majestic ship, thousands of miles to the west, hitting a deadly crystal monolith? - that has to be the Titanic, surely!

I love the idea of a church without a bell tolling for the lives of those lost at sea. Eerie.

Lovely story and a puzzle to boot!

I knew out of anyone, you'd get it! Thought for a minute, I'd made it too difficult, thanks.
