Hope is a mirage
[verse]
When I was a child I was naive.
I believed that dreams came true.
I thought I could fly like an eagle.
do as I wanted to do.
[pre chorus]
Life is a cruel teacher.
It cares not about dreams.
Prayers fall upon deaf ears.
People do stupid things.
[chorus]
Failure hardens the heart.
You lose faith in god.
Life makes you a cynic.
Hope is a mirage.
[verse]
When I was twenty I went to war.
Thought it was a noble cause.
I held a friend while he was dying.
Never forgot what I saw.
[Pre chorus]
Life is a cruel master;
It cares not who you are.
Prayers fall upon deaf ears.
War leaves lasting scars.
[chorus]
Failure hardens the heart.
You lose faith in god.
Life makes you a cynic.
Hope is a mirage.
[bridge]
You chase after rainbows.
but you never find gold.
it all seems so futile.
You hate growing old.
[verse]
When I was fifty I lost my wife.
When a drunk swerved in her lane.
He never served a day in prison.
and I was never the same.
[pre chorus]
Life is a cruel teacher.
it cares not about your dreams.
Prayers fall upon deaf ears.
People do heartless things.
[chorus]
Failure hardens the heart.
You lose faith in god.
Life makes you a cynic.
Hope is a mirage.
[outro]
Yes you lose faith in god.
Hope is a mirage.

Storytelling of the highest order Carroll, another brilliant piece.
I love the chorus, impactful.
Worth putting to music/vocals.

I think you could build more on the "mirage" metaphor in the chorus. Things like "illusions fade" that sort of thing.
In your first verse maybe "I thought I could fly like an eagle" β 'I thought I would fly like an eagle" makes it more future oriented.
And in the last verse:
He never served a day in prison.
"and I was never the same β "I'm in one every day" just to double down on the words prison.

@carroll ooooowee! Nice surprise rhyme God with mirage!! And your hook/title immediately captured my attention.
Yes, life can be cruel and it is a struggle; rich or poor. An outlet is the only true cure such as songwriting at least it's that way for me.
But there is a higher power and there are angels watching over us. And if that verse about your wife is true, which I imagine it to be, I'm sorry you and she didn't receive the justice you deserved. The system is broken but we go on the best we can. Also, the verse about your friend in war; brought tears. So sorry for your loss.
Keep 'em coming, Champ!
