There's A Dead Possum In My Pool
Just me getting all deep and, you know, contemplating the human condition and stuff. Inspired by a true story.
Apologies for the one naughty word, but I just didn't think any other word rang as true, somehow.
or
THERE’S A DEAD POSSUM IN MY POOL
Woke up this morning. Well, that was a mistake.
It's one that I habitually make
Still, I get out of bed, pull on a sweater
A breath of fresh air, maybe I'll feel better
'Cause the house is a mess, the car won't start
And there's the little matter of my broken heart
Feels like the world just did a huge fart
In my face and...Oh, for fuck’s sake!
There's a dead possum in my pool
I don't complain much as a general rule
But how am I supposed to keep my cool
When there's a dead possum in my pool?
Just when you think life couldn't be crueler
It throws a marsupial in your pool or
Does something just as mean and I don't feel any better for
Knowing that he's just a hairy old metaphor
For everything that's wrong in my life
My job, my car, my house, my wife
You know it's a wonder I'm even alive
Unlike you know who
There's a dead possum in my pool
I don't complain much as a general rule
But how am I supposed to keep my cool
When there's a dead possum in my pool?
Well, now I feel bad, where's my sympathy
Poor little fella has it even worse than me
But there’s something I forgot, now here’s a thought
He sure looks dead, but what if he's not
And maybe this piece of furry flotsam
Is just, you know, playing possum
I stand there for a while and just watch him
Could it be?
Could it?
Naaaah!
There's a dead possum in my pool
I don't complain much as a general rule
But how am I supposed to keep my cool?
When there's a dead possum in my pool
I guess there's a moral to this rendition
Of my meditation on the human condition
No use complaining, life's gonna be cruel
Until like a possum we fall in the pool
There's a dead possum in my pool
I don't complain much as a general rule
But how am I supposed to keep my cool?
When there's a dead possum in my pool

This is great Gavin, i liked everything about this tune. The music reminded me a little of The Monster Mash song from back in the day, not sure if that was Dr. Deminto or not as Bill said.

I love fun songs, an' who couldn't love this. Great lyrics, deceptively good rhymes hidden in there.
Well done, a nice break does you the world of good.
Thanks for sharing,

A searing, portrait of the human experience wrapped in lyrics. In the grand tradition of nihilistic anthems cloaked in the absurd emerges a modern-day classic.

Thanks to all who commented. @RainyDayMan - a modern classic might be going a little far, although it's the only song that's ever requested by name when I inflict my "talents" on an unfortunate public. Well, not exactly by name. More like, "Give us that possum song, why dontcha?" 🙄

Thanks Carroll. I was prompted to post it here when I listened to Renee's "My Life Sucks and Nobody Cares" song. When things look bad, turn them into a joke.
