Hey folks! I'd love any thoughts you have on this. It's pretty fresh, and hasn't been poured over yet. The chorus is pretty straightforward, but the verses have some long phrases fitting the melody (I almost always write the music and melodies first):

God Above It All
Anthony Pero

Verse 1
So many times,
It seems that life just longs to tear us down;
To clip our wings and drive us to the ground.
But I couldn’t even say
How many times
He’s picked me up and whispered “It’s alright,”
Then breathed my broken pieces back to life.
So believe me when I say;

CHORUS
There is hope when all seems hopeless.
There’s forgiveness when we fall.
There is joy within our suffering
Even when our faith is small.
There is grace beyond all measure
At the cross where Love stood tall.
‘Cause there is a God above it all

Verse 2
There are still times
When my heart is crippled by the weight of grief,
And my mind is filled with doubt and disbelief;
The lies tumble ‘round my head.
How many times
Must He remind me that His love will never fail?
That this momentary sorrow will not prevail?
It’s so easy to forget (that)

CHORUS
(That) There is hope when all seems hopeless.
There’s forgiveness when we fall.
There is joy within our suffering
Even when our faith is small.
There is grace beyond all measure
At the cross where Love stood tall.
‘Cause there is a God above it all

Bridge
Doesn’t matter the struggle you find yourself in;
When Christ is on your side,
There’s no battle that you can’t win.
Just trust in Him — you can trust in Him.

Chorus 2 (Quiet half-chorus)
He is greater than our weakness
He is stronger than our fear
He is perfect in his promise
He will wipe away our tears

Chorus 3 (Key Change up whole step)
He is hope when all seems hopeless.
He’s forgiveness when we fall.
He is joy when we are suffering.
He gives faith when ours is small.
He is love that lasts forever.
He will hear you when you call.
He is the God above it all.
He is the God above it all.
He is the God above it all.

Anthony, it all seems to mesh very well together. My favorite lines are chorus 2. Strong write.

Good rhythm and flow to it, no doubt because you've already mapped it to the melody!

Strong sense of redemption, and a joyfulness too.

As a suggestion:
Then breathed my broken pieces back to life >
Then breathed my guttered flame back to life
- to avoid broken pieces which feels a bit over used generally.

Nice write!

That's definitely a line to look at...I agree, it is overused, and I should take another look.

I put it in there because it works with the imagery of falling from the sky and hitting the ground. I'd like to work that imagery more, rather than move on to something like "flame," I think, though, which doesn't really call back to the clipped wings of the first stanza.

Maybe there's something other than broken pieces, like "shattered", which is marginally better. I'll give it some more thought. My process on a rewrite would be to list related words and synonyms for broken, like this:

shattered
scattered
smashed
separated
torn
wrecked
disabled
sundered

etc...

And then see if that sparks something. If that doesn't work, then I would go back and have a look at the line that is feeding this one. In this case, line 3, "to clip our wings and drive us to the ground," and see if there is another way to phrase that to lead me in a different direction.

I'll have a go and report back.

Thanks!

Sounds like a plan!

And you may choose in the end to stay with "broken pieces" and that's fine too - you will have decided that that is the best option after looking at it thoroughly.

Hey Anthony,
This is really well written. It's easy to feel the dynamics of it, from powerful vocals to almost whispers...at least the way I hear it. The only nit picky thing that I have is "There is joy within our suffering", maybe something like "There is relief from our suffering".

Good stuff!
