Country music ain’t a new thing
It’s been around for a wild
It’s all about life and living
For every man, woman, and child

So you may think that it’s changing
That it’s become the style you sing
But it was country back in ‘56
“Hound Dog” made Elvis king

If that wasn’t country music
Then I just want to know
What the country singers were thinking
Sixty plus years ago

When “Pistol Packing Mama”
And “Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy”
And a girl asleep at the movies
Entertained and brought us joy

If that wasn’t country music
Then I just want to know
What the country singers were thinking
Fifty plus years ago

When “The Ballad of Jed Clampett”
And “Dang Me” rose and rose
And “The Bird of Paradise Flew Up”
Some rivals nest-like “nose”

If that wasn’t country music
Then I just want to know
What the country singers were thinking
Forty plus years ago

When they said “Hello” to “Vietnam”
And learned to “Skip a Rope”
When “Old Dogs and Children”
In country life had hope

If that wasn’t country music
Then I just want to know
What the country singers were thinking
Twenty plus years ago

When the “Third Rock from the Sun” was us
But “Country Wasn’t Cool”
“The Devil Went Down to Georgia”
But I guess he broke the rule

Now I admit that country music
Has changed a bit these days
For twenty years or so it seems
It’s lost its country ways

I wish we didn’t have to play
All oldies just to find
A little bit of humor would
Be “Gentle on My Mind”

Bit of a walk down memory lane. :)
I'm not a Country fan, but even I recognize many of those!

Just to smooth things out you might try:
Sixty plus years ago > Those sixty years ago

I love how you built this around so much history. I wish I could appreciate all the references, but country isn't my forte. It feels like a good, fun country song.

I am not sure about this line: 'It’s been around for a wild'. Maybe this is a saying I am not familiar with?
