Not That Kind Of Man
Here's a song I wrote with my daughter in mind... even though she was only 8, at the time. She's 25, now. Thankfully, she always had her head screwed on tight, and with a great amount of good ole common sense.
It's a song about the dilemma of what a dad is to do with a bum that has entered his daughter's life.
Shoot him??? Well, maybe not. Here's what I might have done.
Tell me what you think. 😎
“Not That Kind of Man”
By Tom Tognaci
I heard my little girl crying late last night
And I would be lying if I said I thought her boyfriend was Mr. Right
I thought to tell her, “Just get him out of your head!”
But I asked my daughter this instead…
…How many miles would he walk with you, if the going gets tough?
Would he run from a little rain, if the weather gets rough?
Would he offer you his coat for comfort, if the night starts to get cold?
How many ways will he tell you the same things that you need to hear?
And how many ways will he tell you that he loves you, ‘till you finally understand?
Well, I can tell you little princess
He’s not that kind of man
I heard my baby crying late last night
And I would be lying if I said it didn’t make me want to fight
I felt the heat rise up around my head
But I kept my cool and asked instead…
…Would it break his back to make a living, to be a family man?
Could he climb back in the saddle, not knowing if he can?
Is he the man that will buck the bronco, or just a rodeo-ing clown?
How many ways will he tell you the same things, that you need to hear?
And how many ways will he tell you that he loves you, over and over again?
Well, I can tell you little princess
He’s not that kind of man

it's good that you were never put in that spot. Love the melody, it has a good beat :)

Yeah this is pretty nice.... You wouldn't have to shoot him just be cleaning you gun every time he comes around.

It's a wonderful sentiment. I have a daughter too (also with common sense) and hope I would deal with the situation similarly should it arise, but who knows?
I would have liked a little more variation between the verse and chorus, but I suspect that's purely a personal choice. It's all very smooth and easy on the ear as it is.
It's a fine write!

It's a testament to how far the Suno.ai has come. When I first began using it, I could reliably and totally tell that the artificial vocals were just that. . . artificial. That was December of 2024. It has come a long, long way.

Thanks, M... but what do you think of the song writing? The melody?... the atmosphere? Suno produced it, but as you can see / hear.. the song remains the same!
we have to dig a bit, but the vocals are often stunning... as well as the guitar work. I want to use my demos to promote and illustraite my song writing and the whole creative process with the writing.
Sadly, there are some great writers that croak like a frog and play as if they are strumming with a cup coaster. Suno changes all off that!
I happen to see that you follow Ed Clavel.. how did that come about?

Hmmm @IronKnee

Of course I read the story, and I think all of us who have daughters have experienced something similar—When a guy like that starts hanging around her, it turns everything upside down... A complicated situation...
and that moment of doubt about how to help while controlling the anger...
As for the song, it sounds natural, calm, like it's you in a way.
I haven't spoken more extensively before because I've been going through several very difficult situations in my family for some time now. I'm exhausted, although I try to keep my creative world alive even though it's on the brink of collapse.

I also have a daughter. I've seen several young men pass by. Some okay, some not. But they have to learn for themselves. There will come a point where you wonder where this is going, but if it's really wrong, they'll figure it out themselves. Just stand by her.
By the way, great song and well written.

Who is Ed Clavel? I don't recall him at all. But if he has songs I like, and if he followed me, I would automatically respond by following back. I'll go look to see if I can place him.

I found Ed. The reason I follow him is that I do more listening (by far) on SoundCloud than posting. Anyone who listens to me, I go listen to. If I like the music, I like and/or comment, and follow. If the person I follow follows me back, I remain a "follower" and visit once a month to check for new songs. If the person I follow and respond to does not respond in kind, I do not remain a follower. Reciprocal responses are valuable. People who just want to be heard, but don't listen are not valuable, and I don't remain a "follower" if they are not valuable. Ed reciprocated listens and interest. . . so I still follow him.

I played guitar with ED every Friday night for two years. More beer drinking than anything else, but it was great fun. There was 5 of us who got together at the "Marlor Manchin" and we'd Jam all night. Good stuff.

Totally cool. Soundcloud is world wide AND at the same time it's a small world.

My sisters solved that problem by not bringing anybody home when he was around :)

Well this one really touched me. I love the lyrics and I'm also loving the musical arrangement. You don't need a thousand notes and all the twists and turns in the book to make something like this work. One of the nicest songs I've heard in a while. This has class.
@bhengen over here it's strawberries, not cornflakes that get p***ed on!! Just saying😂

Thanks, Chris... I wrote this with my own daughter in mind. Thankfully, that scenario never happened... she didn't do much dating but did manage to find a right proper guy! So far, three AWESOME grandkids from them.
Anyways, thank you for stopping by and commenting!
