Laid In A Box

Verse 1

I used to sleep beneath the overpass

Where the trucks sang lullabies

Newspaper blanket, cardboard floor

Cold moon in my eyes

Folks would step around me

Like I was part of the street

Chorus

I was homeless when I died

Laid in a box

First roof I ever had

Didn’t leak through the cracks

A little wooden address

In a borrowed suit and socks

I was homeless when I died

Laid in a box

Verse 2

Had a shopping cart Cadillac

Chrome rims made of rust

Everything I owned fit inside

Everything I loved turned to dust

They’d say “God bless” in passing

Never learned my name

Chorus

I was homeless when I died

Laid in a box

First roof I ever had

Didn’t leak through the cracks

A little wooden address

In a borrowed suit and socks

I was homeless when I died

Laid in a box

Bridge

Funny how they found me

When I quit breathing air

Took three men to carry me

But none when I was there

Final Chorus

I was homeless when I died

Laid in a box

First roof I ever had

Didn’t leak through the cracks

Six feet of forever

Is the only thing I got

I was homeless when I died

Laid in a box

Two rows back is a billionaire

And we both don't have a care

I agree, its sad and well written. simple and emotional not overdoing it on "homeless details" . interesting perspective too. well done.

  • Two rows back is a billionaire. About it

    Thanks man

  • This is a superb song. My problem is that I'm losing track of what's real and what's AI. You see for me, this really matters. You can be ruthless and just say yeah, I'm on board with AI because it's easy, it saves studio/session players fees and so on. But I worry about where this is all going and I don't like it. Like I say, this is a great song that's definitely you but, well, I just don't know what to say any more. It's why I don't contribute very much on the forum these days.

Yup Tex . I can't afford to record every song Chris . I wish I could . the Song THE CHARMS is being done now and session players are being paid . If I had 100k it all go to session players and studios , cuz once your dead your dead . The universe don't care your a raccoon or a billionaire . You're dead . You and Stone ask the same question on AI every time and know my situation . Its $700.00 to record a song

  • This is a really good. Almost a Tom Waits feel to it.

It's personal. but also social commentary told as a folk tale.

Love the slow pace of it, a funeral march.

    Really good work, Elvis.

  • Homeless problem with a twist angle

    Thanks Owen
