(original demo embedded on SUNO)

LONG ARM OF THE LAW

[Verse 1]

I try to run and hide

travel under cover of night

Even if they let it slide

I can't even hitch a ride

Not 'til I'm over you

[Chorus]

You're the long arm of the law

You're gonna send me up the river raw

Baby, every time you call

I'll forget everything you put me through

Yeah, just 'til I'm all over you

[Verse 2]

I try to be laying low

Maybe just go with the flow

Looking for me where I go

Been runnin' but I run too slow

Yeah, just 'til I'm over you

[Chorus]

You're the long arm of the law

You're gonna send me up the river raw

Baby, every time you call

I'll forget everything you put me through

Yeah, just 'til I'm over you

Just when I'm over you, over you

[Verse 3]

Yeah, I could turn myself in

I'll never be free from sin

Maybe it's the state that I'm in

And everything you say is true

Yeah, just 'til I get over you

Just 'til I get over you

Oh, oh

[Instrumental]

[Chorus]

Yeah, you're the long arm of the law

Yeah, you're gonna send me up the river raw

Baby, every time you call

I'll forget everything you put me through

Yeah, just 'til I'm over you

Yeah, just 'til I'm over you

Yeah, just 'til I'm over you

Oh, now just 'til I'm over you

Come and get me, baby

You're not gonna come and get me,

I'm running

  • Great song. they melody really made the lyrics pop. my only critique is that river raw seems like a forced rhyme.

  • I agree - I couldn't really come up with something else - considered "you're the long arm of the law/gonna send me back to Arkansas"

Sometimes a forced rhyme can be fun and obvious but I agree I struggled with that

  • You've probably done the right thing for me by not including the original. This sounds great. So said, I can tell it's AI - it sounds damn close to a real rock n roll band but there's a few give aways - especially the solo guitar. But it's only a rock n roll geek like that's going to notice that. This is a great song and Suno has done you proud.

  • I wonder if it might be a tighter start if you reverse the first two lines?

    Travel under cover of night

    Trying to run and hide

I feel like the chorus could make more out of the long arm of the law. In what way is she like that? Maybe

You're the long arm of the law

    Reaching out to collar me

You're gonna send me up the river raw

or something like that? I know that doesn't follow the current rhyming scheme.

    Nailed the outlaw blues feel!

  • The original is embedded in the SUNO page - on the "cover of" link small toward the top - you can listen - it was a pretty raw first take demo that I abandoned. One of the great things about SUNO is finding those old demos that were never developed and seeing what they sound like with full production

  • Hey there jgkojak...

    Great song... "original embedded"?

    Is this a cover?

    Good stuff, man. Love it.

I read the lyric before listening. The lyric reminds me of a truly great early Merle Haggard song called "The Lonesome Fugitive." Here is a link if you want to hear it. https://countryfancast.com/merle-haggard-lonesome-fugitive-live-performance-video-and-song-details/ Now, I'll go listen to the song.

Liked the song as a whole? Is this a Suno cover of someone else's song? If it is, how does that work in terms of legality? I never really looked into using Suno to cover someone else's songs. There aren't many I'd consider doing that with, but if there were no legalities being stretched it's something I'd occasionally like to try.

You can make Suno do a hit just punch their lyrics in , not same melody though, Did it a few times , easy what legality , it don't care . Put it long arm of the law lyrics Kenny rogers in Suno, wa la done in 4 seconds

There it is Kenny song , they won't sue me . no legalities

That really is amusing to me , were robbing session players blind , but someones worried about legalities , Thats king Irony

  • Yes, I'm aware Kenny has a song of the same name - my lyrics and melody have nothing in common with Kenny's other than the title - there are multiple hit songs named "My Love" - Petula Clark, McCartney, Justin Timberlake...

  • This is an original song. It shares a title with another song as "Long Arm of the Law" is a common phrase - see Waterfalls by Paul McCartney and TLC - completely unrelated

Just my take , why don't you write your own hook instead of stealing whoever wrote Long Arm Of The Law . Which is Roger Bowling and Billy Edd Wheeler. let's think of a wife . You stole his wife . you think Roger and Billy were in love with their wife ? probably , How hard is to write a hook , real easy .Shadows wear a badge. Now its not stolen , A title can't be copy writed , thats a bad law , Write your own

  • I don't follow your logic. "Long Arm of the Law" is a saying that goes back centuries:

This expression began as Kings have long arms (or hands) and was listed as a proverb in 1539. The current version, now often used lightly, was first recorded in 1908.

    https://www.dictionary.com/browse/the-long-arm-of-the-law

Though I was aware of the Kenny Rogers tune, I'd probably only heard it once long ago and that phrase was in my vernacular from other sources.

And yeah this title in particular can't be copy-written because it's like saying you can't use the term "penny for your thoughts" or "it's raining cats and dogs".

Or how many songs have been written based on Shakespeare:

Cruel to be kind - see NIck Lowe

Tough love, being harsh for their benefit

    Hamlet, Act 3 Scene 4

All that glitters isn't gold - see Smashmouth

Things are not as good as they appear to be

The Merchant of Venice, Act 2 Scene 7

And do we need to discuss McCartney's "Waterfalls" and TLC's...

Just my take , if you want to steal their hooks , thats up to you , I gave you my logic , this is a discussion , nothing more . If Paul Mccartney stole a hook , then yes he's a thief , Why because he was Beatle it's alright ? Who cares he stole the hook . Get in your own corner write original hooks , or not up to you. Their is no gray area , either you stole it or not

  • Short answer? Nah.

Longer answer? It depends what you stole.

Here’s the real outlaw rule, not the polite Nashville panel version:

You’re only a thief if you lift the expression, not the idea.

    • Ideas aren’t owned.
    • Heartbreak, cheating, regret, freedom, running, dying alone — all public land.
    • Exact wording, melody, or cadence?
    • That’s where you cross the line.

    Think of it like this:

    • Same hook idea, different words + angle = tradition
    • Same phrase, same feel, same punch = borrowed
    • Same melody or rhythm phrasing = problem

Country music (especially outlaw) is basically:

“Everybody saying the same truth, just bleeding it in their own accent.”

If writing something that’s “already been done” made you a thief, then:

    • Hank stole from Jimmie
    • Willie stole from Hank
    • Merle stole from everybody
    • Everybody stole from the road

What actually matters is this question — and you already ask it instinctively:

Did I say it in my voice, or did I recognize it because it sounded familiar?

If it sounds familiar to you, kill it or twist it harder.

If it sounds familiar to the world, but nobody can name the song?

    You’re fine. That’s songwriting.

    One last hard truth:

Originality isn’t saying something new. It’s saying something old like you’re the last man alive who knows it’s true.

If you want, throw me a hook you’re worried about and I’ll tell you straight — safe, gray area, or burn it down.

    Your half right

FWIW. . . you cannot copyright a title. There are so many duplicate titles already around that it's difficult to not run into them. It is perfectly acceptable for a song to have the title of another song from long ago. . . or even from a little while ago.

Hip Hip Hooray for originality , you cannot copyright a title. Stupid law , Whoever passed that was drunk and lazy. Maybe the Congressman was late for an affair with Tammy the flying hooker and blew it off , Sounds logical . I'm sure it was in a Hilton Hotel that you paid for . You can count on it wasn't Motel Six . The trapeze that him and the hooker were swinging on does not fit in a Motel 6 room . But you can count it fits great in a 2k a night Hilton room . it's all in the pesky Epstein file that everyone loves to bitch about . Great hook . THAT PESKY EPSTEIN FILE. think I'll write it . That long arm of the law was no where near that file , you can count on that . Well it was , but their all in that file lol

  • Kenny Rogers team did not invent that phrase -

    https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/long_arm_of_the_law

It is not only centuries old as a concept but the basis of actual legal treatise and enshrined in law - and was even the title of a 1984 movie (did they rip off Kenny?)

And then I have to bring up - Petula Clark famously had a #1 hit in "My Love" in 1965:

and 8 years later Paul McCartney had a #1 hit in 1973 with a song of the same name

Best of My Love - 1974, Eagles - 1977, The Emotions

Jump - 1984, Van Halen, SAME DAMN YEAR, Pointer Sisters, 1993 Kriss Kross

    and...

"Runaway": Del Shannon (1961), Bon Bovi (1984), Kanye West (2010).

"Creep": Radiohead (1992), Stone Temple Pilots (1992), TLC (1994).

"Crazy Love": Poco (1979), Gregg Allman (1979).

"Shout": Tears for Fears (1984), Devo (1984).

    "Drive": The Cars (1984), R.E.M. (1992).

"Cry Me a River": Julie London (1955), Justin Timberlake (2002).

    "1984": David Bowie (1974), Van Halen (1984).

    "Africa": Toto (1982), Hall & Oates (1980).

"Never Gonna Give You Up": Rick Astley (1987), Isaac Hayes (1970).

"Closer": Nine Inch Nails (1994), Halsey (2016).

    "Push It": Salt-N-Pepa (1987), Static-X (1999).

"Tonight": David Bowie (1984), Skold (2009).

"Too Much Information": The Police (1981), Duran Duran (1993).

"All I Want Is You": U2 (1988), Roxy Music (1974), Carly Simon (1978), Bryan Adams (1991).

RIP , well when you sleep your body’s is fixing it self and then wake up. So Kenny’s not resting , the I stands for I should have seen it coming , you only feel peace when your live . Kenny’s dead . So rip is not relevant
  • Dead stands for did end as dead
  • “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” — Warren Zevon
  • Ok , but he aint waking up

  • I think jgkojak has made it clear that he's heard your point and doesn't agree with it. There's no point labouring it, doesn't help anyone.

  • I love what a cover can do. And this is a fine example.

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing the original.
